Kaneda was first introduced in chapter 2. Distracted by Tajima Kouichi039s request to date him she walks right in front of a oncoming vehicle and is hit. Fran comes to the rescue originally to answer Tajima039s call for help but to harvest her organs before calling the authorities. Tajima was so desperate to help Kaneda that Fran takes pity and surgically revives her...and turns her into a caterpillar.
