I decided to make a slight changes to the subscoring of ARISE: Alternative Architecture. It does not change the overall 6.9 score still however. Just that stating the Story being as bad as 6.2 is kinda a stretch I admit. So I decided to impose more of its negatives toward the Presentation instead from 6.0 down to 5.6. Since it is closer to pacing and enjoyment problems actually. You may check all the subscores in my profile if youd like. FYI this review is spoiler free. Indeed the story didnt have any real purposes from the characters including the Major Kusanagi herself. Despite all the plot twists and complexities being thrown here and there they are the team actually just doing their job as national security agents here in this series. No more or less fundamentally. And I can say that out of the five arc stories in Alternative Architecture I enjoyed only one. Which is when they investigated the death and the coffin of Lieutenant Col. Mamuro. I felt that the flow of the plot and storyboard was pretty much better in that one compared to the rest. Though it doesnt mean that the other four arcs stories were that bad either. Twasnt really bad to be honest. But its just that the deliveries of these stories were endup being fall flat because of the restrictions which occurs due to its own style of perspective and storytelling. Look its actually quite complicated for me to explain. But bear with me a little if youre curious. This anime has a bad habit of delivering stories by words and discussions. You know actions and illustrations speaks a thousand words but ARISE chooses more of the thousand words than to illustrate or utilize the storyboard. There is not much space really to enjoy the show. The flow suffers due to its kind of storytelling. Like you blinked for a second or your mind leaps a bit you lose valuable information or two. It happens because they try to give you much more of the perspective of detective side. 90 the agents viewpoints 10 the enemys views I can say. Whats the aftermath of this ? Well when you watch other animes theyll give you at least the outline idea of whats the enemies intentions and purposes are. Some even went so far to delve deep into the minds the surrounding the backstory the progress and the motivations of such antagonists. In ARISE you couldnt wish much for that. You have to guess. As how the Major and her team guesses. Well I get that this is a detective show but IMO they went overboard for this. They sacrificed the pacing and compositions for the sake of secrecy. The only revelations and hints from the enemy viewpoints are shown mostly when subjects were getting closer to Major Kusanagi or when they are captured already. Then how do this anime delivers all the details and plot to the viewers ? By thousand words of course. I said it once again. There is not much other way. Yes the twists and illustrations was it illustrations ? was no illustrations. You have to hear the characters exchanges a ton of dialogues. To discuss to guess to negotiate strategize argue etc etc because they dont show much of the enemys doing. And unfortunately when the action happens it wasnt depicted any close to wonderful animation either. So there is much less thrill than what I suppose should be. Because thrill needs momentum. And momentum needs changes in between. And there is hardly changes here when all you see is a constant fullserious scenes from the very first minute to the end that makes you fall asleep from boringness due to its flatness. And the soft tune of beats of the techno music helps you very much toward that end. Probably this was the TLDR. Did I made it? Yeay. :D I can say this anime took it too far to present a sophisticated detective playing experience. Which will not be enjoyable for most viewers. Some might feel challenged to guess whats going on but most other will suffer the chore of its tedious flat attention span. Well if youre smart has an ultralong attention span and likes to solve twists this anime is probably for you. But if you cant even survive reading this rather long review I suggest you better dont go watch it. As for me it makes me feel fortunate that I wasnt taking a detective job IRL. I wouldnt want to go daily guessing on what other peoples trying to do all the time while risking your life on it. As how Major Kusanagis team seems more than motivated to do.
