If my own happiness will lead to the misfortunes of others then being unhappy is probably the wisest choice. Rea Sanka Zombies romance a bit of ecchi and a touch of humor. Why wouldnt I be interested in this anime? It checks off all the right boxes and seems appealing enough to be a decent anime with a familiar plot element. What did I find? Something a little deeper than I was anticipating if Im being entirely honest. It wasnt just the fanservice or romcom cliches that made me enjoy this anime. It was the storyline that gave purpose to the characters. Thats what made me truly enjoy Sankarea. Dont get me wrong The ecchi elements and and typical romcom cliches were great but this anime contributed so much more. Art and Animation: 8.7/10 Lets be real the art wasnt anything extraordinary and the same can be stated for animation. No breathtaking moments and nothing emotional about it. It was adequate animation appealing character designs and great ecchi moments. The reason for the aboveaverage scoring is because of how consistent the quality if animation was. The characters had never felt stiff or awkward and the environment/backdrop was given great attention and care as well. While youre not receiving anything with highquality visuals and overthetop glitter effects this anime doesnt fail to still deliver a pleasurable viewing experience. Storyline and Character Progression: 8.1/10 This is probably what I appreciated and hated the most from this anime. The good parts were good and the bad parts were bad. Lets begin by looking at the acceptable parts. I absolutely loved our main characters especially Rea. A timid girl that still had the passion and desire to live her own life. The chemistry between Rea and Chihiro was very engaging and I never got tired of their personalities. While the love triangle development and romance portions were a bit weak it wasnt forced either. What about it went wrong then? There are just some things you dont like to have in your anime. And a perverted delusional father is one of them. Im not gonna go too far into it because of spoiler reasons but I hated his guts to the point where I wanted to skip all the screen time he had. I believe using that as a villain element simply didnt resonate with me and probably wouldnt work for other viewers either. Its not like he matured into some sort of deep and compelling character after they revealed his backstory to us either. On the contrary I hated him even more. And he seemed to just get more ridiculous and blander than before. Thats all I have to say on that matter so lets move on with the rest of the cast instead. While there were a modest amount of characters the majority were just supporting roles. Side characters were side characters and didnt receive much attention. So dont expect the character cast to be the largest or most impressive. As far as the storyline went this is where I most enjoyed Sankarea. It was classic yet innovative and refreshing to me. I think the reason why it appealed to me is because of how much it fit Reas character. Her personality her problems her dreams. All of it harmonized with the events of the storyline brilliantly. If anything Rea is the one that saved this animes storyline from being unbearable and bland. Her lovable and airy temperament alone made the anime worth the watch. Sankarea was one of those bittersweet examples because of the flaws that came with it. Soundtrack and Audio: 9.2/10 The strongest point of the anime in my opinion because of a few reasons. The first being how exceptional the soundtrack was. Its surprisingly rare to find an anime with a really good opening AND ending theme but Sankarea made the exception. The musicality fit the energy and tone of the anime And the visuals that came along with these themes added even more to its quality. Lets not forget about our vocal cast either Needless to say they did an amazing job too yes even the perverted father. Each person had fit their characters and their personalities. Whether it was expressing surprise happiness or embarrassment they all executed each moment well. As for the sound effects used throughout the anime there were no problems here either. No cheap or overused audio effects and no problems with the lipsyncing. Concluding Thoughts At the end of it all Id give Sankarea an 8.7/10. For while it didnt accomplish anything spectacular or emotionally moving its still above average in terms of quality. The bittersweet character cast absolutely lovable soundtrack and consistent animation make this an easily enjoyable romcom. Id say this anime is perfect for someone looking for an ecchi or romcom with a little twist of supernatural elements to freshen things up. Or even someone just looking for a romcom that isnt too serious about itself. As a result I could confidently recommend Sankarea to anyone whos a fan of romcom or someone whos just looking to fill their time with something thatll make them smile and laugh to some great characters. Well thats all for this review. As always thank you so much for reading this far and Ill see you in the next one A special thanks to my Editor: Zedlin Streaming Platform: Crunchyroll
