Folding refers to the process by which cells in our body fold proteins into various shapes and sizes used for many things around the body from creating enzymes to creating the collagen found in your bones and capillaries. Our favourite cells platelets use a protein called von Willebrand factor to stick to the collagen in our blood vessels in order to clot blood and prevent bleeding. Proteins play a vital role in our bodies 220https://i.ur.com/MMCPxlN.gif And when these proteins are mis folded it can result in terrible disease such as Alzheimers cystic fibrosis Huntingtons disease and many forms of cancer Im sure many of us have family members that have fought these dreadful diseases at one point in our lives. In order to fully understand how these proteins are folded and how this can effect the body scientist must perform millions of calculations and finding the computing power to do so is very expensive This is where YOU come in In the year 2000 Stanford University started the Foldinghome project. People would offer up some of their computing power in order to help scientists solve these issues. When thousands of people just like yourself work together and use their computers to solve these calculations its almost as if a super computer is working on these calculations. By running the Foldinghome software on your PC you can help solve these problems. You may think your computer may not be powerful enough to run this software but you can fold with just about any computer be it an old HP you have lying around collecting dust a raspberry pi to the most cutting edge hardware you can buy. The software simply uses your computers processing power whilst itd idlingOr full time if you want and runs these calculations in the background.
