Born in Paris on July 13 1929. At the age of thirteen he left school and began a woodcarving apprenticeship with his uncle Lucien Pessey whose career he will briefly do at seventeen. At the same time he followed drawing classes and was particularly interested in American cinema represented by Charlie Chaplin Disney and Tex Avery. His career in animation began when he joined a psychiatric institution as an animator to take care of artistic activities. From 1956 to 1960 he animates for the patients of the establishment painting puppets and shadowgraphy workshops. In 1960 he made his first animated short film about a story written by the patients of the institution entitled Les Dents du Singe Monkeys Teeth. He won several prizes mileCohl Prize Mannheim Prize French National Film Center Quality Award for this first work both childish and grotesque. He made three fulllength films some short ones and many others collaboration. All three of his films share key themes: the difficulties of communication the dangers of acquiring power without understanding and the inability of humanity to see its place within an ecosystem. Laloux died in 2004 from a heart attack leaving behind a small body of work that speaks of an enormous and fruitful imagination. He explored film to its limits realising that great themes huge worlds and demanding concepts could best be served through animation at a time when other means of creating special effects were not up to the task. Heres a look at each of his three movies... Hoping his work inspires a new generation of filmmakers to test the limits of their imaginations for our benefit too.
