SPOILER WARNING Persona 3 is probably one of my favorite JRPGs ever if not the only. While Im waiting hopefully to get a PC port of this game Ive decided to watch the movies related to the game knowning well how fun the Persona 4 show is and how poorly the 5th game has been adapteted even if this last one was made by another studio and also showing a friend that never played any of the game whats so intersting about the series. This came out after AIC A.S.T.A. worked on the Persona 4 The Animation and some of the OVAs but instead of going for a 24 episodes show they decided to make 4 movies which so far works well enough but I still think it would have been better as a show. Let me start by saying that the art and animation are AMAZING and especially when they go into The 25th Hour with different colors that show how weird that alternate dimension is. The game had some cutscenes too that this movie adaptated but they look WAY BETTER in here. The fight scenes were kinda hard to adapt since the game is a turn based RPG but I think they did a pretty good job to make em in real time with a character charging in to attack the Shadows one at the time. Of course they reused some of the music from the game which are all bangers in my opinion and I think they reworked on some like Burn My Dread which plays in the intro of the movie. The cast of characters is intersting even if I feel like they mostly concentrated themselves on Makoto The main characters name in this adaptation. Junpei and Yukari get a bit of development but not as much. Hopefully this gets fixed in the other movies and knowning the game it probably will. A big problem I had with this adaptation is that sometimes it tries to be too much like the game is based on. Like I said before the fights work perfectly but theres stuff like a small scene playing then the calendar from the game appears to show that one day passed and then show a scene in another context and time. I mean is it really necessary? I think the viewer can figure out that time has passed or you can tell it in other ways but by showing that calendar its so weird. It does work when more than a few days passes. The Velvet Room scenes are also all in first person with Igor and Elizabeth speaking directly to the viewer instead of showing Makoto sitting on a chair. I think it would have worked better since you know... we are not picking choices like in the game but Makoto is. Speaking of him He is a bit of an apathetic and shows to not really care about other people and even himself. This could rub off wrong to the first time viewers who didnt play the game or dont really know anything about it. I think He improves a bit better at the end of movie and hopefully in the sequels too. Back to Velvet Room theres a scene where Igor talks about Social Links and the wording regarding that is another comparison to the game that didnt work very well. Im sad to say that in this movie theres not many Social Link stuff compared to the 4th game adaptation cause well... its a movie so they had to cram everything important and leave out the optional stuff which is kinda sad. Once again I hope this is improved in the sequels. There are still scenes where Makoto talks to a character and have a little Social Link interaction but they are too short and just dont develop much the characters in my opinion. The movie does a few improvement from the game. An example is how the 25th Hour looks in this movie is way better compared than the game version. Another example is how much time they take to stop the train in the game after defeating the shadow while in this movie they quickly go and try to figure out what to do. Lets just say this would have worked better as a show with the first initial episodes developing the plot and then one episode to explore the other characters and Social Links kinda like how Persona 4 The Animation does. Overall Id say it does a pretty good job adapting the game and Id recommend it to fans but if you never played the game some stuff could result a bit confusing.
