SPOILERS BEWARE Chobits is an anime from Spring 2002 centred around a wannabe college student Hideki who manages to find an abandoned Persocom in the trash one night Persocoms are PCs that look like humans and they are the newest trend in Tokyo which is where Hideki moves in order to study for his college entrance exams. I actually picked up this anime based on the fact it was recommended to be similar to Plastic Memories but was it able to compare to it? This is a bit of an oldie as its nearly two decades old but old doesnt necessarily mean bad yes the art is very different but I was used to it after the first episode speaking of the first episode as it sets the tone and plot of the entire show as we quickly realise that Chi the Persocom which was found by Hideki is no ordinary Persocom as she can only say Chi which ends up becoming her name. I can easily say I was pretty much already hooked on the show after the first episode. The show progresses as we see how Chi learns about the human world as she has a selflearning program installed and this entire show was just so adorable and heartwarming to watch Chi is a PC but she is basically a newborn child and watching her learn about the world was very enjoyable to witness. Any interactions between Chi and Hideki in this show seem so pure because if Im not mistaken the Persocoms were designed to only speak the truth for the most part so what Chi says is what she really feels and thats not something all romance anime do as some characters can hide their true feelings because they are shy or afraid but Chi in this show just felt like anything she did or said was super pure and natural and it goddamn warms my heart cause of how sweet it is. Chi definitely helps this show a lot because yes she is a main character while also being amazing in everything she does. This show is also pretty funny and has a great comedy aspect to it because since Chi behaves like a newborn she has no shame so to her being naked is perfectly fine as she is yet to learn that in actuality it is not perfectly fine. Theres some nosebleed scenarios for our MC Hideki here and there and they are really funny its the kind of humour which may not be for everyone but I love it for instance the bathing episode is one of those scenes and its a good laugh for me. Now its time to talk about my favorite episode in the entire show and that being episode 21 in the previous episode Chi gets abducted and Hideki goes out looking for her all night but is unable to succeed he finds Mr Ueda who is the bakery manager where Chi works and he tells us the viewers about his past revolving around his love for a Persocom and how he even got married to it when we start getting into the main part of his story the second ED song starts playing which I really like and it generally fits the situation too its a perfect song to emphasise his story and it does a great job since it easily became my favorite episode. If I havent mentioned this in any of my reviews then I will now but characters and anime which have some sort of sad and tragic backstory easily become my favorites in this case the fact that Mr Uedas Persocom started to decay overtime which eventually led to her having a completely corrupt hard disk which meant that the data and memories of their time together were gone these times were gone for his Persocom but Mr Ueda was unable to let it go so he refused to get a new model or even replace the hard disk then one night his Persocom managed to save his life by pushing him out of the way of an incoming truck and sacrificing herself in the process this resulted in her becoming almost unbootable and even being barely able to speak at this point his wife had died for him even though its only a PC he was so engrossed with her that it was like her dying for real. This episode was just amazing as it emphasises the main question of the show which is can romance flourish between a Persocom and a human? and it builds very well into the last five episodes of the show it was that good of an episode that I actually watched it a second time the day after before continuing on with episode 22 and my opinion was just solidified in the fact it was easily my favorite episode in the show. The last few episodes are pretty much mainly focusing on Hideki and his feelings for Chi in regard to what he actually thinks of her a friend a Persocom or a potential lover? The show does get a bit SciFi here and there too as Chi is supposedly one of the Chobits series which in urban legend is the kind of Persocom that has real human emotions and thoughts and love toward their owner. Chi inside her also has a program which she attempts to run throughout the show called the one for me and in order for this program to run the person Chi loves has to love her back which ends up happening by the end of episode 25. Next a bunch of story happens which I wont be touching on but by the end of the last episode Chi seems to come to her senses after locking herself away after hearing Hidekis voice and the couple is back together although they were away for a maximum of three or so mins anyway. The ending seems to do a quick Uturn on itself but its still a good ending as it is satisfying for me at least so no complains here. My final opinions on this show it wasnt as tearjerky or emotional as Plastic Memories but still damn enjoyable regardless and as mentioned earlier from the first episode I was already hooked the entire show is just so heartwarming and any scenes involving Chi are my favorite as they are either funny cute adorable or heartwarming. As a romance anime I think this succeeds even though there may be limited times it feels like a romance anime there is more than enough content which is pretty suggestive if you use common sense. Overall the entire show was just very enjoyable and if you like romance anime then this one is recommended solely based on Chi she is such a good character and makes this show so much more enjoyable for me. Overall an oldie but a darn good one.
