SPOILERS BEWARE Her Blue Sky is an animated movie from late 2019 which has a similar setting to Anohana but let me briefly explain the plot of the movie as I will be referring to it later. Also there are Anohana spoilers in here so if you havent watched that show then dont read this Anyway we have Aoi and Akane who are sisters but are parentless as both their parents died in an accident when Aoi was only four. There is also Shinno who was Akanes classmate they had a promise to both move to Tokyo but this promise was broken by Akane probably for the sake of raising her younger sister this obviously devastated Shinno. Thirteen years later Aoi is trying to become a bassist and meets the now 31yearold Shinnosuke which is Shinno but adult like I will refer to Shinno as the 18yearold and Shinnosuke as the 31yearold for ease of reference. On the day Aoi run into Shinnosuke later in the evening she also found Shinno in her guesthouse where she typically practises her bass. These are the four main characters of the movie that you really need to focus on. The only tag that this movie seems to have is drama which yes there is plenty of but other genres also apply here like supernatural for instance a simple point of reference for that genre would be when Shinno is finally able to leave the guesthouse and has the abilities to levitate that was a pretty shocking moment for me. What seemed to be the main plot of the movie was when Shinnosukes band was meant to play in Aois hometown but their drummer and bassist got food poisoning Aoi ended up becoming the stand in bassist and one of Akanes work colleagues becomes the drummer this clearly wasnt the main plot since this performance is never shown as this movie starts shifting more towards the four main characters and seeing how they fight their feelings for each other. This is where the Anohana vibes kick in as Shinno is existing in the past world as Shinnosuke is Shinnos current present self. What is shown later in the movie is that Shinno loved Akane back when they were 18year olds and when he found out that Akane isnt moving to Tokyo it was almost a straight rejection for him. Now Aoi sets her goals on helping Akane and Shinnosuke to try to get together as this is what Shinno wants but there is a problem Aoi develops feelings for Shinno which is very relatable to the ending of Anohana as Jintan starts realizing his true feelings for Menma same way Aoi realizes hers for Shinno. Both are hallucinations and visions which shouldnt exist and by the end of their show/movie they end up disappearing. However if I had to compare this movie to Anohana then its far from its level as Anohanas ending was an emotional masterpiece Her Blue Skys ending was just alright its not that emotional and tearjerky if even at all. A brief note as I was watching this movie when I was tired and had much lower quality audio then normal as thats all I could find and believe it or not that could actually affect the experience for me but I dont think it really did for this movie. Regarding the characters I dont really have much to say on any of them they kind of just existed and helped the plot progress nothing in particular stood out to me about any of them besides Akane for some reason she kept reminding me of someone else but I could never figure out who it was so thats it for character review short and sweet this time. Music is pretty good the OP and EDs are very pleasant and fitting for the genre of the film and some of the OST during the movie is pretty amazing and very memorable it plays at the right times to emphasise said scene so I have to give it credit where due. The art is very similar to Anohana and the setting of the movie also seems familiar to it set in one specific town which has history for the characters the exact same way Anohana did its plot. Art is very good but that alone cant carry a mediocre plot to greatness. Overall it does indeed have Anohana vibes but its a shadow of the true masterpiece that Anohana was it may be harsh to compare a movie to a show which has much more time to consolidate its story but thats the most relatable show I can compare it to which will allow me to score this in the most honest way possible. Its not an absolute must watch but still decent if you have some spare time and liked Anohana.
