Personal Opinion
For those looking for another virtual reality based story similar to Sword Art Online, I would definitely recommend Accel World. The story is incredibly similar in the fact that it is also virtual fighting based with some romance stuck in between. What sets Accel World apart is the depth of the character background and the fact that the story is set up to allow character development.

The story gets a 8/10
The story is extremely thought out and clever. I would actually consider the story unique, but more from a technological standpoint. It bases around a computer system unknown to the public called Accel World that can influence space and time. That being said, I did feel that in general there were some parts that seemed out of place and the antagonists were a little stale. The main appeal of the story in this series is that the futuristic setting was very well written.

The characters get a 9/10
The characters in my opinion were really thought out and allowed room for development as the story progresses. The interaction between characters and their emotional reactions, mainly scenarios involving Kuroyukihime, really helped the characters balance each other out and work well with the plot.

The art gets an 8/10
One thing the art does incredibly well is display the characters emotions as well as their reactions, which adds just that little bonus to the characters and the general story. The artist also added a bit of a modern touch to some of it, allowing it to fit well with the technological side of the series.

Overall, Accel World gets an 8/10
The detailed, somewhat unique story and interesting characters blend together well with the art to create an overall pleasant experience.
