Desert Punk is a show that I really do genuinely love. Theres a certain appeal to anime that are just so obscure and weird that it draws me to them easily. This is a case in where many claim this show to be bad when in reality there is something great about it that I personally cant get enough of. Desert Punk takes place in a postapocalyptic world. Japan is essentially a wasteland of desert and rock after a nuclear disaster. Everyone is fending for their lives and no one is who they seem. Kanta Mizuno the Desert Punk is a man who is a mercenary that will do anything for the money and the...ahem breasts. Now you may think the wait is this show just straightup fanservice? And while I would like to say it does the show doesnt present it out directly as in your face and it is served as more of a comedic element to the show. While I cant say the show is mature in that sense it is in the fact that it handles so many situations so hilariously. Kanta is so unpredictable that you wonder if hell do something good or bad every episode. Sporadic comedy plays so well in this show and I can guarantee you that youll be smiling. Desert Punk goes against the grain of normal anime that it manages to be a hellofa ride. During the first half of the show there are so many moments that had me bursting out into audible laughter. The episodic story blends so well into the comedy that its hard not to keep watching which does bring me to the second half. Youll know when you get to the second part of the show when the fun opening changes into the mellow dramatic one. The show suddenly switches gears at the last moment into tricking you into something else. Honestly the last half of the show was enjoyable but I couldnt help but wonder if it couldve used more episodes. It might have been a good way to end it but it just didnt feel as if it needed to go the way it did. Desert Punk isnt visually astonishing but it does have so many overexaggerated moments that make up for the lack of polish. Whether its in the action scenes or the parts where Kanta is up to something pertaining to fondling Junko. Oh and then theres the liveaction opening which is really a treat to watch as well. I dont think there was a person in this show that I disliked because there are so many good dynamics with everyone. Kanta reminds me so much of a much more sadistic and greedier version of the main character from Golden Boy mixed with a bit of Vash the Stampede Junko is pretty much Fujiko Mine from Lupin III if she had balloonbreasts and Kosuna is just a loveable semimoe sidekick. Theres more to the cast including people like Rain Spider who is his rival but all in all there wasnt a moment where you could say I hated a certain character for more than one episode. The tonal shift kind of threw me for a loop and so did the switch in characters halfway. Even though it might be the most fun approach for our main protagonist Kanta it isnt the most satisfying. Desert Punk is such a great time it isnt completely perfect but it is something genuinely fun. Some may consider it to be tiresome after awhile and that is something I have to disagree with. The shows comedy is so westernized that its hard not to enjoy a lot of it nothing really feels lost in translation. I mean Desert Punk and his rival Rain Spider have a duel waste all their ammo and end up resorting to elastic rubber bands to settle their conflict. Whats not to love about moments like that? The show is a blast and it doesnt get too overly hyper for some to not enjoy its stay. Though it may have its a turning point where it does take a dark turn its still a show thats worth your time.
