If you really want to protect the person who means a lot to you you cant think about yourself getting hurt. Yasuo Hazuki The RomCom genre chances are pretty high that youve seen at least one anime out there that falls under this category. And with this genre comes a barrage of easily identifiable tropes and hilarious cliches. After youve seen a few of these anime though it starts to become challenging finding something that REALLY stands out and sets itself apart from the countless other anime out there in the genre. As a romcom enthusiast Im always on the hunt for something that can make me fall in love with this genre all over again as Toradora and Kaguyasama did. When Oresuki came around I honestly had my doubts. In the beginning I enjoyed the catchy and upbeat OP and the art/animation REALLY appealed to me. But the first few episodes were something that I wasnt used to AT ALL: it embraced what it means to be a romcom/harem. I was quite surprised when we got a main protagonist who wasnt a complete pushover especially because this anime involves a bit of harem. And to top it all off Joro ended up being someone who had more to his personality than meets the eye After being with this anime from the beginning until the end I can say with confidence that this anime truly paves its own path in the romcom genre with its honest comedy. Ive been able to add yet another romance anime to my top 10 list and its none other than Oresuki. Heres my breakdown of one of my favorite anime of 2019 Art and Animation: 9.6/10 This is one reason why this anime really stood out to me this year. The art style used had really appealed to me with its beautiful lighting and diverse colorful palette. Oresuki wasnt an eyesore to watch at any point and this is thanks to its consistency in animation as well. The character expressions carried the proper emotion behind it and their faces never looked stiff or forced. The camera angles were used in an effective way with a balanced variety of close up and panned out shots at the proper time. By doing this the proper mood in certain scenes was properly conveyed so that they viewer could easily pinpoint the situation occurring and the emotions that some of the characters were feeling in just a camera shot alone. The character designs were nothing special and yet they were While these character designs had fit their tropes down to a T the studio had managed to still make them unique and enjoyable. This was one of the few anime that I could say I enjoyed the entire cast of. And by cast I mean potential lovers. Each of their designs fit not only their tropes but also their personalities as well. The bubbly and upbeat childhood friend the shy and conflicted tsundere the reliable and comical student council president and the calculated but devoted main love interest. These are just a few of the characters youll encounter while watching Oresuki and each of them gets their own time to properly shine. Also during comical scenes the art style used was quite varied. From cute and cartoonish sketches to heavily shaded or hard lines to evoke a rough emotion the art style had always fit the moment perfectly and made it even more enjoyable to watch. Oresuki had some of the highest quality art/animation Ive seen in a romcom so its no surprise that it got such a high scoring. Storyline and Character Progression: 9.4/10 This is where a lot of people may disagree with me and heres why. This anime REALLY plays off of its cliches and tropes and openly jokes around about being a romcom and the events that take place. This may make people feel like the anime is somewhat bland or just doesnt stand out. So in this aspect sure the anime CAN be a hit or miss for some people. But for those of us looking for something new for a change Oresuki is a GODSEND. While the usual tropes were definitely used I learned that not a single character should be taken at face value because they had a bit more depth to them that you might not expect. While there wasnt really a drawn out and defined storyline the character interactions and little moments more than made up for it. Our main protagonist Joro wasnt the indecisive and dense character youd expect from a harem but instead was a gogetter who took full advantage of others feelings and true motives. This was such a breath of fresh air as I FINALLY found an anime that got rid of the spineless and clueless child in so many harem anime. Joro himself was a protagonist that I really enjoyed watching because of his unique personality. This Dr. Hyde sort of persona was something that I hadnt seen before in such a open manner but it had fit so well with the comedy of it all. Our main love interest Sanshokuin Pansy was someone I INSTANTLY deemed best girl and TopTier Waifu. Her personality had a soft spoken and yet commanding tone to it and her intentions were unclear but very calculated. Just these two characters alone show how unique Oresuki really is if not the other characters. Especially Benchkun 3 When there were serious moments in the anime they didnt feel out of place or forced. But there were still a few plot twists that really added depth to not only the characters but also the characters relationships and interactions with one another. Youre sure to enjoy all this anime has to offer with its hilarious moments and heartfelt emotion. Soundtrack and Audio: 9.2/10 About the only part of the anime that I wished they spent a little more time on Im not saying anything was bad but the use of a soundtrack throughout the anime wasnt apparent. There were definitely a few moments where they couldve added something in but I guess you cant do it all right? This point aside the OP has become a favorite of mine because of its energy and upbeat vibe. It accurately represents what to expect from the anime and definitely stands out enough to be memorable to viewers. I really appreciate the fact that they took their time on the ED as well since a surprising amount of anime dont pay enough attention to have a decent ED. The song itself in the ED fits so well for an ending song and I never got tired of listening to it play at the end of an episode. The art/animation used in both the OP and ED was as beautiful as the anime itself with our girl Pansy being shown as just herself 3. As far as the Audio goes I didnt have any complaints. The characters had sounded so nice with the proper emotions sounding genuine and they never sounded awkward or out of place. Each character had a voice actor that fit their role and shined in both emotional and comedic scenes. I cant express how enjoyable this anime was for me as its one of the few anime Ive given a personal 10/10. Every week I looked forward to the next episode and every week I was satisfied and hungry for more If youre out there looking for a romcom that adds a fresh twist to the genre then I HIGHLY recommend that you try out Oresuki for yourself. While the overall tone of the anime can be hit or miss depending on whether you like the honest comedy and cliches or not someone looking for something new in the genre wont be disappointed by this refreshing take on romcom. So without further ado Oresuki has finished with the score of 9.3/10. Thank you all SO MUCH for reading this far on one of my favorite anime fo 2019 and if you havent already give Oresuki a shot See yall in the next one Streaming Platform: Crunchyroll
