Akira Amemiya

Akira Amemiya graduated from Tokyo University of Technology and was a part of the universitys Anime Research Society. During his time in university he was heavily influenced by the work of Group CAShttps://twitter.com/groupcas Osaka University of Arts own Anime Research group. At the time of Amemiya Toshiyuki Satouhttps://anilist.co/staff/107357/ToshiyukiSatou was part of the group while Ikehata Hiroshihttps://anilist.co/staff/120505/IkehataHiroshi visited regularly. This inspired this young talented animator to make Kanadastyle anime. After a bit on indie work Amemiya joined studio Gainax and slowly climbed up the ladder: from cleanup to animation direction on to storyboarding and episode directing until after joining studio Trigger and codirecting Kill la Kill finally having the credentials to direct his own series. Amemiyas animation and storyboarding style is heavily influenced by Trigger founder and fellow member of the neoKanada school Hiroyuki Imaishihttps://anilist.co/staff/97349/HiroyukiImaishi. Amemiya is his protege and has worked on every one of Imaishis shows. Their comedic timingshttps://blog.sakugabooru.com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/02/miniimaishi.mp4 are very similar although Amemiya is less goofy and chaotic containing more retro devices like impact frames and multitonal shading. He is frequently typecasted for old school mecha combat whose animation is pose heavy and slightly dull in color reminiscent of Masami Obari. Masami Obari would be such a big influence for Amemiya that he would replicate several animation sequenceshttps://blog.sakugabooru.com/wpcontent/uploads/2018/10/dangaioh2.mp4 quirks and layoutshttps://i.ur.com/nTRdM4K.jpg most notably for SSSS.GRIDMAN. Amemiya could generally be considered a nerdy director very often referencing other series and artists he loves both in storyboarding animation and often mechahttps://twitter.com/SSSSGRID/status/1051063114022572033 designs. Another significant influence on Amemiyas style is Hideaki Annohttps://anilist.co/staff/100111/HideakiAnno whose Neon Genesis Evangelionhttps://anilist.co/anime/30/Evangelion/ is Amemiyas favorite serieshttps://i.ur.com/nEYK186.png. SSSS.GRIDMAN uses recurring Anno cutshttps://blog.sakugabooru.com/wpcontent/uploads/2018/10/welcometotheannoclass.jpg and draws heavy inspiration from his long lingering framing. Amemiya adds his own personality to his odeheavy artistry by adding subtle detailshttps://blog.sakugabooru.com/wpcontent/uploads/2018/10/whatkindofbrandisTOMATOLIFEtho.jpg many silly visual gags and repurposing the work of several very tonally contrasting artists into his own.
