He was born on January 9 1885 in Hino district Tottori prefecture. At the age of 19 he immigrated to San Francisco. He also won a scholarship from the New York Art Students League and had several solo exhibitions in San Francisco. Kiyama opened his own studio in the shuttered street of San Franciscos Japanese neighborhood where he lived until 1937. Kiyama became a painting teacher at an school in his hometown of Nezu Hino district and continued to paint and make efforts to promote local culture. He died on April 24 1951 at the age of 66.
