I'm a pretty average weeb who's trying to work his way through all the countless great animes, past and present.
Since I'm forgetful, atm my paused list just equals my "high-priority"/"up next" list.
I write brief comments on the stuff in my list, however through importing them from MAL they've become sorta fucky. Oh and some are just sorta old...
Some random stuff about me...
I grew up with... Shin-chan, Doraemon, Dragon Ball (O+Z), Detective Conan, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Heidi Girl of the Alps, Captain Tsubasa, Digimon, all that shit. I was lucky enough to be able to watch most since they always aired on Spanish TV however I stopped watching them around 11-12 when I moved back home to England. All the above though are still close to my heart and give me nostalgia, and one day when my lists are shorter I'll get around to rewatching them all.
Satoshi Kon is my all time favourite director and Sennen Joyuu and Paprika are my all time favourite films and anime. Sci-Fi is (probably) my favourite genre.
Some other stuff I love are rain, cold weather, nighttime, cyberpunk, chill music, FPS games, mystery, spicy noodles.
I watch nearly all anime subbed, with the exclusion being certain (usually older) comedies.
If I can help it, I don't watch overly sad shows or films...
I'm a pussy okay?
I'm probably more of a film than show person. At least right now.
Explanation on my scoring...
I have a soft spot for animes that take risks and stray from the norm. While I do try to be objective in realizing flaws, when it comes down to it the most important thing for me IS still probably just how much an anime provokes me and makes me feel (though not in negative ways) as that does ultimately determine how much we appreciate art. Another thing is that I compare films to films, shorts to shorts, and so on. They're all different mediums and try for different things and so I rate them as such. My average on here isn't and shouldn't be close to a 5 because I'm generally selective with what I watch and know my tastes, and like most people a lot of what I end up watching ultimately comes from it's reputation, whether in popularity or in acclaim or both. And this is especially true since up to just recently, I haven't been watching anime seasonally. As for the average still going to a 5 due to a lack of things to compare stuff to and an average forming in that way; I have, and do consume plenty of similar media (namely live action tv and film, and western animation). I trust myself to recognize bad to mediocre to great writing, characterization, direction, sound direction, etc, etc.
Something I'm happy to call a masterpiece. A "I'm gonna pester all my friends who haven't seen this to watch it now anime" and "it's been 2 weeks and I still can't stop thinking and talking about it" anime. An ageless classic that will in my eyes stand forever as a crowning achievement of the director's. Since it's true that nothing can be "perfect" it should follow that "masterpiece" doesn't describe something perfect, just something very, very close; and this anime is something that I think is so well crafted and put together that it gets that close. All of these made me "feel" like few others, left a sizable impact on me, and are things I'll always be amazed by.
Examples: Millennium Actress, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Princess Mononoke, Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni
An amazing, "uhh should I or should I not make room on my favourites list for this?" anime. I might be able to identify a few very minor problems some might have with it but I probably don't hold any myself. Overall this anime is still close to perfect for me in both part and enjoyment; just a bit less close than those above it (or lacking in that... "super special" feeling). These are all definitely still stuff that I'll forever be revisiting, and they'll always hold a special place in my heart. They're just about all favourites.
Examples: Hunter x Hunter, Cowboy Bebop, Mob Psycho 100, Time of Eve
A great, "holy shit I really fukin liked that" anime. It has a few more (albeit small) issues than those scored above it for me, but it was still insanely enjoyable and well crafted; and will still stand-out very strong among the majority. It's more than solid, and very enjoyable. Anything here I definitely love.
Examples: Samurai Champloo, Your Name, My Hero Academia, KonoSuba
A good, "well I really enjoyed that!" anime. I have or can see more issues with this one and/or maybe it has one larger failing in or at a certain part, but at the end of the day it was still definitely enjoyable, and the issues I had with it didn't manage to get in the way of that too much. It's good, and I would still happily recommend and rewatch it.
Examples: Death Parade, Youjo Senki, Overlord, Summer Wars
A decent, "wow I wish certain things were different about this, but I like nevertheless" anime. This anime probably missed it's full potential for me and I might have had various larger problems with it, but there were still redeeming parts I found to it and I still found a fair bit of enjoyment in it. It doesn't quite deserve the title of "good" but it's not average or bad either; it's just "fine". It's still serviceable and worthwhile. It offers positive value. There's still a decent chance of me rewatching some of these.
Examples: Tokyo Ghoul, Afro Samurai, Goblin Slayer, The Promised Neverland
A very average, "can't say I dislike this, but I don't especially like it either" anime. I found quite a few glaring issues with this anime and/or had some myself and so I probably didn't enjoy it too much either. This isn't to say it's all bad, but if I knew what I do now, chances are I wouldn't have originally watched it and instead spent my time elsewhere. Mediocrity is a waste. And very forgettable - I probably don't (or won't) remember much from these.
Examples: Sweat Punch, Reincarnated as a Slime, Mary and the Witch's Flower, No Game No Life
Below average and disappointing. A "I don't despise this, but man did it fail for me" anime. The animes in this category are quite a mixed bag, some I may personally hate quite a bit but find it hard to ignore certain decent qualities of, and others (the majority I think) I don't hate but just find too many failings in their execution. However they are all shows that by the end of I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. Collectively my thoughts and feelings lean to the negative.
Examples: Tokyo Ghoul √A, Halo Legends, B: The Beginning, Kara no Kyoukai
Very bad territory. An anime I can confidently say that I really did not like much. There's still SOME features to these animes that prop them up a bit that save them from being lower; they still might have offered something that I might have somewhat liked... However they're still huge regrets of mine that I wish I had never watched. They're more than just disappointing, and I probably found most of my time with them to be really grating.
Examples: Banana Fish, Appleseed, Sirius the Jaeger, Empire of Corpses
Terrible. Anime that are just a hair above the absolute worst for me. Can't quite say that these offered nothing or had absolutely nothing good about them, but I can say that what they had to offer made little to no difference in saving them from being something terrible, extremely forgettable and/or something absolutely I hate. These are anime I definitely had a hard time not getting a bit toxic over soon after watching with the internal pain they caused me.
Examples: Angolmois, Sword Art Online, Ao no 6-gou, Final Fantasy: Advent Children
Offered absolutely nothing for me. Probably made me hate myself for being a completionist. Insultingly terrible. Made me question just about everything about the staff. Well past laughably bad territory.
Examples: Shichisei no Subaru, Angels of Death, Aguu: Tensai Ningyou, Utsu Musume Sayori
Stuff I Gotta Rewatch...
This is admittedly more for myself than anyone else, however the shows here are probably also shows I think my rating and opinion could change on/isn't fully developed. Also if we're friends and you're planning on rewatching similar--we could try do it at the same time for discussion!
