Unfortunately he plays the role of the loser since he keeps getting rejected by the guys in the story. His watch is a metaphor for how he treats his lover and his mental state since he always wears the same watch and never takes it off it represents his devotion to one person. In the beginning of the series he was the villain but this was more a result of his devotion to Ken Amafuji as the bad boy at that time.
