Itou Tsurukichi

A young Japan man hired by Bird as an interpreter and travel guide in Yokohama. He is called Ito by Bird. Not only does he have exceptional English skills for a japanese person at the time but he also supports Bird on her journey with her skillful negotiation skills and deep knowledge of customs. Although he has no formal education he served as a servant of the British army stationed in the United States and also has accompanied botanist Charles Maries on a trip to Ezo.
