Amazing Directed by Isao Takahata Omoide Poro Poro Only Yesterday tells the story of Taeko Okajima an office lady in a large company in Tokyo and decides to visit family members in the countryside in Yamagata and during that trip she has memories of the 5th grade moments in which its like shes telling the viewer about her past. 220https://deliriumnerd.com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/08/event7687966.jpg The movie alternates between the present and the memories of the past where in the present we see the life of the adult Taeko who feels good in life in the countryside leaving life in the big city while in the memories we see the young Taeko facing common things of the age problems at school beginning of puberty fights with the sisters. In a way we see her maturing seeing her in the present I probably wouldnt imagine she was like that. The way the past and the present alternate in which at least in my watching experience I really felt connected with the adult Taeko and really telling me about the past I cant explain it in words but it was different from just seeing a flashback of a character both in her moments remembering the past and telling us to the other characters. 220https://deliriumnerd.com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/08/passadoepresente1.jpg The characters convey a sense of realism in which they have their problems feelings and imperfections during childhood relationships with parents and sisters frustrations and friendships all of which convey a sense of realism. At present Takeos relationship with Toshio is also realistic observing the interactions and conversations between them which shows a friendship and which shows happiness for both which makes the loving feeling at the end of the movie real not only being a romance where the couple stays together simply because it is a movie. 220https://deliriumnerd.com/wpcontent/uploads/2017/08/taekoetoshio11.jpg Speaking of animation it is fantastic how they contrast memories with the present with scenes from the past being in a watercolor style creating a visual effect for the memories which however obvious it is that it is the past is interesting to use the visual resource to contrast the two periods.Just like in any Studio Ghibli movie I will praise the visuals especially the sunset scene I really like the whimsy that the studio team has with their work 220https://sm.ign.com/ignpt/screenshot/default/onlyyesterdaytaekotoshioqs1w.jpg The final scene is perfect to end the movie the scene of Taeko leaving and returning to Tokyo when her young version with her classmates appears and who finally make Taeko return to the farm and to Toshio. A scene which uses visual recourse to show her feelings how her past influences the future and a perfect balance in maintaining realism and putting something symbolic. Personally it brought me a very strong emotional impact it makes you reflect on some things. A great job from Takahata.
