Its gags clean and simple a review of The Daily Lives Of Highschool Boys A shortish review of one of the funniest mangas one monkey brain has ever read. Introduction how and why I read this manga skippable This was a manga I came across by pure luck. After looking more into it I understand that it had a fairly popular anime adaption however I am not allowing that to bias my review of the manga. Anyway I came across this manga by luck after looking around anilist for a new manga to read and added it to my disgustingly long and ever growing backlog. I didnt think about it for a little while until after i had finished fist of the north star a series which has fairly serious tones. After this I read Zombie Powder and decided I wanted a comedy rather than delving ever deeper into the shonen cesspit so my brain doesnt fry in the greasy disgusting shonen jump fanboy brain. This series came as a breath of fresh air from the usual shonen/seinen action manga I read a lot. While I love manga that arent shonen/seinen action mangas this series is unlike anything ive ever read. Brief summary of how this manga portrays itself. This manga is so easy to pick up and read that anyone can enjoy any chapter without any context. On the surface the characters are just nerd schoolboy stereotypes and thats partly what makes them so great. While their actions make them each fairly unique throughout the manga the fact they are so blank slate and understandable to anyone means that each of the chapters are incredibly easy to pick up and enjoy. Unlike a series like Grand Blue Dreaming a series I also consider a 10 the comedy isnt so much character driven as it is more slapstick humour and goofy puns. While Grand Blue Dreaming uses its well established characters and their superbly written interactions to make me chuckle this manga delivers one suberb and goofy punchline like a hit of pure comedy into my veins. Speaking of that comedy.... Jokes Comedy Humour essentially whatever you wanna call the hahas So these are the exact reason why i give this series a 10. Its a gag manga through and through and doesnt try to overplay itself or stretch itself too thin. The author uses a few pages of chuckleworthy lines before giving you a punchline that makes you belly laugh. Wether its the boys getting bored in school or going to the beach to try and get some female attention the jokes always land at the right time and make me laugh pretty much every time. The key thing with these jokes is that they are NOT deep and dark humour theyre stupid puns and slapstick jokes. An example would be the boys getting bored and attempting to find a way to cure their boredom in school. We see Hidenori and Tanaka in the playground before attempting to play catch with something. We see them try and ball up and throw their blazers leading to an onrunning joke of them not understanding that the force will break the bundle of jacket apart. This is then followed by them playing catch with one of their shoes. As they go to throw the shoe it proceeds to get stuck in the air floating above the boys before the boys say shoerreal. While not as funny explained the stupid pun on the words shoe and surreal is perfectly on brand for this mangas stupid gags and its dumb puns and slapstick never fail to make me laugh. Bonus chapters that dont feel forced in and are actually really funny. This series does exactly what any series should do in utilising its bonus chapters. They follow a side plot that doesnt feel crammed in and are on par quality wise with the main chapters. These bonuses mainly consist of the side story High School Girls are Funky and while sounding like a Lidl version of Nichijou it maintains its own identity and compliments the main story perfectly. Its a roughly 20 chapter or so story focusing on the over the top and comedic lives of highschool girls rather than the boys. It often plays on how grudgeholdy and territorial girls are stereotyped to be but in a more light hearted and funny way. This all culminates in a funny yet satisfying end to this 20 chapter sub plot in 94.5 not going on for too long but still making me chuckle every time. Conclusion The Daily Lives Of Highschool Boys is a manga that anyone with a sense of humour can pick up and read and laugh at at least something. Wether you laugh at the funny reaction faces the dumb puns or the well portrayed slapstick theres something here for everyone. This kept my monkey brain well entertained and laughing for its duration and is the 2nd best comedy manga ive ever read just behind Grand Blue Dreaming This is a lot more easily accessible than Grand Blue Dreaming however. It is incredibly funny and one of the most entertaining mangas ive ever had in a manga. Its something anyone can and should read and enjoy and is easily one of my favourite comedies as well as being one of my favourite mangas overall. Theres not a thing Id change for the world.
