I genuinely love Lovely Complex. It may not be the most deep piece of fiction. But it really manages to tug your heart strings through its simple yet endearing story.
The manga takes its time to develop both Koizumi and Otanis characters and develop their relationship. No arc feels like its been dragged on for too long or went by too fast. Though I cant say that for the first few arcs because they are a bit slow.
I must even say the anime does a better job pacing the first few arcs. Even though Im not a big fan of the anime But they do a pretty good job of setting up the main duo and the story. After one character makes a big move for their feelings. Its all uphill from there.
I genuinely love Koizumi and Otanis relationship. Both learn to rely on each other and become more open about their feelings and thoughts through out the story. Their relationship grows with each new arc.
This series thrives off their dynamic and relationship and its an absolute treat to watch. Their constant bickering and banter is really entertaining. Honestly their relationship is just overall really well developed cute funny and sweet.
If I were to give my biggest criticism to the manga. The side characters arent all that well developed. Like theyre entertaining to watch interact with the main duo and the other characters and they do develop in the story its just that their development isnt enough for me to considered them as characters that stand out on their own.
The mangas art is surprisingly good. Especially if youre considering the fact that this manga came out in the early 2000s and most manga art from that time period either ages really well or really badly. For me the mangas art is good. Its distinct and has a cute charm to it. Its not the most amazing manga art out there. But it does a really great job portraying the characters emotions through its expressions.
If youre reading this review because youre having trouble deciding whether or not you should watch the anime or read the manga. I HIGHLY recommend reading the manga since the anime cuts out a LOT of the relationship and character development that happens. Along with them cutting out stuff that gives a lot more context as to what characters think and feel.
Overall I really love Lovely Complex. Its not by any means a perfect and deep story. It has flaws that I want to bring out but cant since I want to make this review as short as possible. But its best parts are really enjoyable and it overshadows a lot of its flaws. Its honestly a really sweet and fun read. And I cannot recommend it enough.
