CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SUMMERTIME RENDERING. That said why you would read a sequel/spinoff without reading the main series I have no clue. Summertime Rendering is of course a thriller/action series that forces shonen and horror to mix into a unique little cocktail. The Room That Dreams of Murder on the other hand is a lot more of an easygoing almost cute mystery. Set in the alternate timeline that appears at the end of Summertime Rendering The Room That Dreams of Murder follows Ryuunosuke Nagumo who you should remember from the main series and her overly precocious niece Haine yep who needs an apartment to stay in while she goes to Tokyo U. They find a good apartment with low rent but the past residents have been driven off out of fear of a ghost. Nagumo and Haine become extremely interested in figuring out whats going on and decide to stay in the apartment temporarily. They experience various supernatural phenomena and do their best to figure out what the hell is going on. Overall The Room That Dreams of Murder is about what youd expect from a one volume series. It feels rushed and isnt great but still manages to tell an interesting enough story even if that story doesnt have much depth or really much of anything. Still theres only so much that you can expect from one volume. Art pretty much the same as in Summertime Rendering the art is unique but neither impressive nor detailed. It does its job and is good enough but isnt anything crazy. Characters Nagumo and Haine are nothing like they were in the original series since The Room That Dreams of Murder is set in an alternate timeline and all that. Rather than badass and hungry eldritch horror theyve got a cute familial vibe going on that I think works really well. Since this is such a short series they of course dont develop much so theres not much to say here. The overall plot while Summertime Rendering is very much a mystery thats solved over time The Room That Dreams of Murders mystery is solved in a way thats just supposed to be satisfying to the reader. Its an interesting solution but nothing crazy. Theres also a whole lot of supernatural stuff going on in this little spinoff including in the solution to the mystery so it isnt fun in the way a detective series is. The Room That Dreams of Murder is a fine spinoff to Summertime Rendering. Its nothing that really feels like more content not that the originals ending left much room for continuation to begin with. The overall feeling to it is a lot more SoL than thriller and it doesnt flesh out characters much and is overall limited a lot by its length. I wasnt blown away by any means and it wasnt as much fun as the original series. That said its still a fun quick read for those who enjoyed Summertime Rendering and are looking for more.
