Karakuri Odette is the story of an advanced robot who takes the form of a teenage girl. Theres nothing that she wants more than to live the human experience. The story starts when she convinces her creator who serves as her father figure to allow her to enter high school. Karakuri Odette is all about the human experience. Odette learns about what it means to be a human as well as all the emotions we experience from sadness to romantic love. She also has to come to face with these questions: How close can she come to being human? and Does she have a heart and can she love in the same way as her human friends? Odette is our lead. Shes a very curious robot deeply in love with the world of humans. Shes particularly interested in what its like to be a girl and as a result she has a strong love for the traditionally feminine. Odette wants to become a human and she must come to terms with the fact that shes still a robot and that being a robot isnt bad. Shes very naive and full of childlike wonder and she always strives to learn more even though she can be insensitive. Asao Kurose is probably one of our most prominent human characters. Hes a juvenile delinquent always picking fights. However he becomes very close to Odette and while he initially views her as a robot he quickly grows to view her as a girl with thoughts feelings and emotions. He too wants to be viewed as something other than what he is on the surface as shown by his feelings for Odettes friend who was the first person to help him despite his reputation. The third main character is Chris. Hes a less advanced android and as a result he has a harder time with emotions and illogical behaviors and ideas. Hes very innocent and does what hes told. He was created with a sinister purpose in mind but he is able to grow to care about people starting with Odette. He wants to be able to understand complex things even though he currently isnt able to. The later half of the series introduces more characters who also have a strong presence and character growth: Shirayuki: a sheltered and isolated girl Travis: a very human seeming android and Grace: a less advanced android who has never been treated like she has value. Ill also give a strong shout out to Professor Yoshizawa who is a lovely person. He shows compassion to all beings robot or human. He treats Odette and Chris and to an extent Grace like his own children. Hes just a nice dad. Its such a character driven series and I think the characters and the emotions presented really stand out and make the series. I was surprised since it was about robots but after finishing it I realized I was moved. As for the art I wasnt a huge fan of it. but I didnt have any serious gripes. I have really high standards when it comes to pretty art. XD I think this is some of Julietta Suzukis earlier work so it makes since it would be less refined. Ive seen some of the art for her later and most iconic series Kamisama Kiss and there is a definite improvement. I only have one gripe worth and that was just some random sexism. Fortunately the sexism was relegated to a side gag the thing was Odette couldnt be a super hero but Chris could cause hes a boy and Odettes a girl. I just feel like I should mention it cause even though its a small thing it could still affect people. : I did really enjoy Karakuri Odette. It was such a wonderful emotional take on robots and the human condition. If you want a scifi series that makes you feel something and isnt all action I recommend Karakuri Odette.
