Martial arts magical fantasy action bromance that made me think of 21 Jump Street without the cops WhyPhy Korean Jesus and Skanky Hoes. Wait I could be speaking too early about the skanky hoesafter watching the end of the season. Anyway how can I describe the show? Hmm... I guess not a boys love? But hey how close is close ... The main pair follow the rival bromance tropes well with Lan Ge being the cocky gungho and energetic half of Fa Hua who is the cool handsome brains of the pair. They become locked into an unexpected fate when ancient magic Peerless Bead forces them into a dual cultivation partnership. Trying to find a way out of the bind they compete in the 3 Kingdom tournaments and win a curse removal charm they hope will remove the bead from their systems. But the charm fails and I feel the larger plot kicks in to move the story away from being just a fantasy comedyaction and toward the adventureaction genre mix. The show opening is rather mundane with some exposition and world design hooks. But the storyline is interesting and compelling that it pulls you along at a good pace and before you know it you want to see episode two. Theres a good amount of comedy and well balance of tropes and clichs. Like Fa Huas cool quips and one liners Lan Ges passionate and noisy reactions that kind of remind me of Asta from Black Clover only less loud. The story itself is unfolding at a good pace with solidifying the boys relationship via tournament battles and slowly going into the main story with character motivation reveals and conflicts to add. Although doing a story this way does face the dangers of continuity tangles but I suspect it would be fine. The side characters arent that memorable yet. Although its clear of their roles and purpose they sort of are just props to make our heroes look good. I do like the Shengchan / Huo Zhanji pairing being OP idols for our boys. And my BL enthusiast self is drooling over the shipping. Still I think if the side characters had a bit more air time to give the story more well roundness it would solidify the storyline even more. So when our protagonists go through those tense growth stages it would really hit home. Still for now they play their parts to an expectation. Off topic but Id really like to see a 21 Jump Street parody of the pair going all out in a battle against monsters and demons. Thats just my silly wishlist for fan service. Back to my thoughts on the show. The martial arts follow a magic based system and so far I havent got a good grasp of the cause and effect between power bases. With Lan Ge being able to wield all four elements I would imagine there would still need to have some sort of power cost and consequence for being able to wield all of them. Guess this was the reason his father had previously restricted him from going all out with his magic until he was old enough. Also with Fa Hua who is considered a genius of his demographic I would also imagine he has restrictions and consequences for casting power. At this stage the cause and effect is just skimmed on the surface. I suspect with upcoming conflicts it would become more obvious. Good quality animation and solid CGI which I would imagine isnt cheap to produce. I know how hard it is to even make eyelashes look like eyelashes so I give props to the strong quality in this area. Then again the same studio for the show also manages Soul Land so I imagine the quality wouldnt be any less. Looking forward to seeing how the characters grow and pull the story along. Episode 15 looks to plunge the storyline on a more action packed and darker/dramatic path which is expected at this stage of a comedyaction show. Especially when author did a plot device that still leaves me going grr. Understand the need but seriously? Anyway... Overall an entertaining fantasy action that is well worth the look and one Ill continue to enjoy and follow.
