Most high schoolers hate school. The school I attended from 8th to 10th grade became such a nightmare that I would pray for school to be cancelled. I wanted to be sick to delay the difficult tests for just another day. I wanted the school to flood again so that I wouldnt have to hide my interests or personality for fear of being ostracized. I had a particularly rough sophmore year and every day I just wanted something to happen so that my school would go away. I was so miserable I just wanted it all to be over. I can understand why these characters were so desperate to try and get rid of the school. If school is gone then its like the problems you have there are gone too. Rika hates school. She has the usual problems like too much homework difficult tests and her boyfriend dumping her. Shes even lost the will do do her favorite sport after an injury despite having the potential to win championships. One day she encounters a chatroom where her classmates are complaining about school. She forms a connection with three of them and they soon begin to work on a plan to blow up the school. XDay was interesting and had an interesting premise with interesting ideas. However two volumes was not enough to cover all of what was going on. There are so many heavy topics crammed in and while it does an adequate job with most of them and treats the heavier things with the sensitivity they deserve. However they arent explored very much. I also have questions about how one of the characters problem relates to the school. Its a tragic story but it doesnt have much to do with school. The ending was also way too convenient. The end of the first volume has a major cliffhanger which leaves you wondering about the fate of three characters but the final volume ends with almost no consequences for any of the characters which honestly makes no sense given the stakes we were presented with Mr. Money and Jangalians plots. The characters are all compelling with their own struggles. We have Rika and her apathy as well as the mask she constantly puts on to hide her suffering. Polaris tones herself down so much at school that she feels she can only be authentic when she wears her own clothes. She also seems to be depressed but that isnt really explored. Her character was the one I saw myself in the most. Mr. Money is friendly and always smiling but hes the one suffering the most. I honestly didnt understand why he wanted to blow up the school since it was his home life that was so miserable. Jangalian is actually an antisocial teacher who wants nothing to do with the chairmans daughter whos stalking him and trying to force an engagement. I would have liked him more if there wasnt the shiptease with Polaris his 17yearold student. They had sufficient characterization for something so short. Ill also talk about the oneshot since that was super weird. Its a dystopian series about cows which have been genetically engineered to have human DNA since normal cows died out. A single cow becomes friends with a human boy in the midst of a plague where cow meat is the cure to the deadly disease. Its creative but its also super weird and horrifying especially with the cannibalistic undertones with the people eating the cowhumans. It was well done I guess? Its just the weirdest thing ever and Ive read some weird things. The art is very pleasing. I love Setona Mizushiros style and how elegant the character designs are all while having a sketchy handdrawn feel. The colored images always have this nice pastel color pallet which is super appealing to me. I think it was a solid manga but it had a lot of flaws mostly due to the length. Id easily recommend it to someone looking for a shoujo with a unique premise that deals with how most teens actually feel about school. While it was no masterpiece by any means Im glad I read it and I appreciate what it was trying to do.
