Well I have finally returned to my much loved Umineko review series I just got sidetracked by a lot of shoujo. And I have to say that this keeps getting better and better. Im wondering if this part will set the stage for how more of the parts will be approached since it was a bit different from the previous two parts. This time around while the Ushiromiya murders take place we see a lot more of Battler and Beatrices battle of wits as Battler tries to refute the existence of witches and prove his family members innocence. More and more witches come into play creating an entirely different atmosphere. Meanwhile we get to glimpse into Eva Ushiromiyas psyche and past revealing her motivations and darkest aspects of her personality. This time theres less of a mystery and more debate. I found this approach to be very refreshing since I was expecting an alternate retelling of parts 1 and 2. I think the inclusion of other witches is very interesting as well as the discussion of the true nature of witches. We even get to see a tiny bit of Beatrices past as well as her explanation of her origin. I am still very confused as to why Battler doesnt believe in witches while hes being held hostage in a timeloop by multiple witches and demons. I dont know what rational explanation he has for that or his thought process. If it werent the work of witches this would be the biggest thing that Id be curious about. Thats the main factor that keeps me believing in witches but some of Beatrices later actions and words left me doubting the tiniest bit. I do like the new witch characters. My favorite was the witch Virgilia Beatrices wise mentor who aids Battler. While they werent introduced until recently I am curious about the quiet stoic Bernkastel and the childish Lambdadelta. I have a lower opinion of Rudolph Battlers father this time around. He does not sit right with me. As for Battler he is growing on me and I am glad that the perverted side of his personality is completely gone to the point where I feel like Part 1 Battler is a completely different Battler. He feels more mature this time around and his reactions feel a lot more human. Beatrice also feels more human this time around showing loneliness and seeming to learn compassion. However she remains an enigma with more mysterious aspects of her personality. In order to fully discuss her and Eva I will have to go into spoiler territory. Despite the art being done by the same person who did the art for Part 1 I feel like it improved. The designs werent as sexualized as they were before and there werent any of the creepy high Muppet faces that were in Part 2. There can be creepy faces without the characters looking like puppets that are on something. So I think this time around the art combines the best qualities of Part 1 and Part 2. I do like Umineko and I cant wait to read Part 4 The introduction of Ange Ushiromiya is exciting and I find her character to be compelling. This series just keeps improving and I cant wait to see what it has in store for me.
