This was one of the first high school romances I started so I was a lot more lenient on it when I started reading. And a few nights ago when I was trying to keep up with it I realized that I had read so many better manga and I just stopped caring about this series at all. I always knew it was deeply flawed but it was addicting and I had fun reading it. However as I read more and more shoujo romances I realized that this series was really just mediocre at best. Chiken Sana didnt choose her school because of the academics. What she wanted was no uniforms and a chance to see her celebrity crush the social media influencer Ugou Kanato whos a student there in the grade above her. What Chiken didnt expect was to be pulled into her idols life. In danger of being expelled Kanato must use his status as a celebrity and a student to bring more people to the school but the only problem is his status comes from his looks alone and hes not exactly techsavvy. Chiken finds herself as his assistant who takes over the social media parts where Kanato only has to look good. However Chiken has a thing for pretty faces and Kanato has the prettiest one around... Im just going to say that this manga had potential despite the plothole in the premise. If hes a social media influencer shouldnt he know how to use technology? Isnt that like the one basic skill you need to be an influencer? Its not like he has people to do it for him since hes just some normal attractive guy and if he had someone helping him the plot wouldnt have happened in the first place. I think it could have been really cool to go into the world of social media and influencers the darker side of social media and figuring out how to market the school using Kanato. However all we see them doing is taking random pictures of Kanato and putting it on the school social media account. I just feel like the premise is wasted. We could have had these two kids falling in love over learning how to market on social media and discovering how being an influencer isnt as nice as they think. Instead we get a rather boring romance. Im going to address another random thing that made no sense. Kanato ends up in Chikens class yes I want to read her name as Chicken and its very difficult for me to avoid making chicken jokes. Its allegedly for influencer stuff even though her job is a secret and they take no pictures in class. Its simply weird since hes a whole grade above her and having him go back to his first year of high school for no reason makes no sense. They could have at least made up an academic reason or something. The romance is pretty standard and boring. The characters are not very interesting Ill get to that in a second and it was just very difficult for me to believe a lot of what was going on. Kanato will get all up in Chikens face and hell do something obviously flirty with a straight face. And the fact that its just used as a cue for the audience to ship them and not as something that affects their relationship or makes them think about their feelings at all makes no sense. If it were played like Kanato not getting personal space or Chiken realizing that he may be seriously into her and that her celebrity crush might go somewhere that would be fine. But its just there and neither character really acknowledges it and it was just frustrating for me. I also have no idea whats going on with the plot right now since they achieved their goal and I guess theyre dating now? Either way I dont care very much. Chiken has as much personality as a roast chicken which isnt very much. She likes dudes with pretty faces and she gets swayed easily by their looks. She feels more like a selfinsert than an actual character. I dont know what she likes other than attractive men or anything about her which is frustrating. Kanato is slightly less empty since he has an insecurity. Hes afraid of people only seeing him as a pretty face and he wants to be seen as a real person. I think that could have been interesting if the story went in a different direction like the alternative one that I proposed. However hes so boring that I couldnt even tell you what kind of person he really was. Theres also the love rival whose name I forgot. He and Chiken bonded a bit and I felt like there was a bit more chemistry there but he ultimately was on the same level as the other two. Hes the awkward and shy kid but hes actually secretly very attractive he just hides his sparkly eyes under his bangs. I dont remember anything else about him. Theres also one other character whos Chikens friend but shes irrelevant to the plot. Thats it. Thats all the characters who appear in this manga other than oneoff characters like the principal. The art is this mangas saving grace. This is the strongest part of the manga hands down. Its gorgeous and I love it. This was the biggest thing that kept me invested in this manga alongside the initial addictiveness of the chapters. The character designs are super cute and it has a very strong distinctive charm. Even if I am not a fan of Karin Anzais writing I love her art. Shes a talented artist and Id like to see more of her designs. https://preview.redd.it/ittakesmorethanaprettyfacetofallinlovehas800v0mx1emhxoej0a1.jpg?auto=webps=fda79dc8c1143112f4094f772385ebf746b2a8f4 https://64.media.tumblr.com/2c6af8717f37a51ac2a28235668b85f0/065384c8bb1953fd42/s540x810/ca5e25b45634452ae825574d6c0183a82914e48e.png Its not a bad series by any means. It just feels empty and shallow which is odd for a series called It Takes More Than a Pretty Face. Ironically the pretty artwork is the best part of the series with everything else being lackluster. Id say its on the lower end of average with additional points added because Im weak against pretty art.
