Tokyo revengers season 2 is the type of show you could watch to feel better about yourself since it is pretty hard to fail more than it did. It is honestly harder to figure out ways in which it didnt fail than in ones it did for this review Im mostly going to ramble about my grievances with tokyo revengers season 2 as I think it has had a weirdly high score on this site since it started airing. First of all season one was not perfect but it still impressed me so much with its cast and amazing highlights that I thought my issues with it would resolve with time. The issues just became even more glaring with season 2. You would think that the main character takemitchy would become at least 1 less insufferable with season 2 but he only became more of an embarrassment since he was given more time to develop but absolutely refuses to do so. He does not in the span of this show get more intelligent by learning from his mistakes he never shows a shred of maturity which is strange since he is mentally the oldest character in the show. I understand that he was sort of a loser and loner in his adult life so maybe he doesnt have experience but he is still more of a kid than the literal teenagers in the show like Hina. He never plans ahead and he keeps failing in the same way over and over which makes it so hard to root for him. I have autism and I am genuinely offended by his character as it feels like a caricature of people on the spectrum. But hey at least the supporting cast especially mikey and drakken were really good in season 1 and by far made the show worth it in the first place so they should be able to save this season right? Well no Mikey and drakken are so overpowered that if they were important in the season from the start there would be no conflict at all. You know you have a problem with your story when the most interesting part of it has to be underutilized for the mediocre main character and other boring characters to take the spotlight. Its like if shanks was the only good character in one piece. The show already has way too many characters since it was so easy to forget most of them between the airing of the two seasons so for some reason this one had to introduce even more characters and backstories than we had before and at this point you lose interest because you already had to remember so many faces and names. 220https://scontentarn21.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.64359/131390471219929379783765656646026946666546n.jpg?nccat=103ccb=17ncsid=8bfeb9ncohc=bYxHwoKNkjwAXUHjXncht=scontentarn21.xxoh=00AfCsZlXMAlfirEn0MyxKBkFOmjfeSKatS6sakOkTbQHRQoe=64516676 Their dynamic made Takemitchys weak points so much more interesting since Mikey was the first person to see through them and appreciate Takemitchys heart. This is mostly missing from season 2 and Takemitchy feels like a dull character without it The conflict between the Shiba family was not bad. Its not something I can really talk about that much either though the message is basically domestic abuse bad and it doesnt have a profound message regarding that. It also did not deserve an entire season of story telling. This entire arc could have been made into a 2 hour OVA. This arc does however highlight another problem with season 1 that mikey and drakken cant possibly distract us from anymore: the ages of the characters. How the hell is Taiju Shiba 16 years old when he looks and sounds like hes got a wife and four kids waiting for him at home? The problem with this is I cant take a story of a teenager who is built like a 30 year old bodybuilder on gear beating his little siblings seriously when it is so absurd and devoid from all reality. Jotaro from part 3 is a prime example of this type of character design working because 1 he fights characters built the same way and 2the fights in JoJo arent based solely on physical prowess. In tokyo revengers the fights arent based on anyhing but bad writing. Its not even bigger guy wins since mikey always does and is a twink. He is just strong for no reason. Taiju is like a boss fight without a health bar until the other overpowered characters step in. The only possible outcome from the start was takemitchy and the lesser members once again being saved by mikey and drakken. 220https://preview.redd.it/wherestherestoftaijutattoosv0r5jdeg1tigca1.png?width=640crop=smartauto=webps=795b657a2000e1f971a66e6943d1f90dcd8abc7b Me when Im 2 meters tall and have a visible 8 pack at 16 years old Speaking of parents where the hell are they in this entire story? The only parents that play a very minor role in this story about teenagers are Hinas and theyre in like two scenes It would not be that hard to just make these characters young adults and it would make the show a lot more grounded than it is when mikey who is actually built like a 14 year old can take down the aforementioned Taiju with little to no effort at all. This show makes no sense as a gangster story and the time travel element is barely touched upon in this season. The main factors that gave season 1 life are underused and overall this season leaves me with such a bitter taste in my mouth that I dont have much hope for the future of this story. The backstories werent all bad I dont mind seeing mikey and drakken at the end of this season they did save it from being a full on disaster I suppose. Thats why the score isnt lower the op/ed were also songs with animation I guess? The OPs visuals were honestly good better than the rest of the season.
