Mistress Fortune is what happens when you combine Arina Tanemuras fashionable magical girls with the comedic tone and psychic powers of I.O.N her first work. Its a lighthearted magical girl series which is rare for Tanemura and I consider it one of her weakest works that I have read so far. Kisaki can use ESP and works for the PSI as Fortune Tiara alongside her partner Giniro Fortune Quartz who she has feelings for. The two fight extraterrestrial beings as the duo Mistress Fortune. However Kisaki is nowhere near the level of the genius Giniro who seems to only care about Kisakis body rather than her personality. Will Kisaki ever let Giniro know about her feelings? Mistress Fortune is an episodic series for the most part. We get Kisaki and Giniro flirting and fighting aliens as well as dealing with the policy that prevents members of the PSI contacting each other outside of work and discussing their personal lives which I find funny since these are literal middle schoolers. We get some development of their relationship and their psychic powers but the series by and large does not have much in the way of closure. The two became close but I never got the feeling they started dating. Theres also some random stuff thats just thrown in and the aliens sort of felt like a plot device to bring the two characters together. Very little is explained about anything in this world as the series is focused on the relationship between Kisaki and Giniro. Its just one volume long so that contributes to the lack of resolution. I think it could have worked better as a longer series. https://simplicityanime.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/mf100.jpg?w=584 Kisaki is a bubbly 13yearold with the rare power of electromagnetic waves. Shes bubbly sweet and singleminded in her pursuit of Giniro. She was cute but not a character to write home about. Giniro honestly didnt seem all that great since hes the pervert type character constantly commenting on Kisakis Ecups. I hope he outgrows it honestly since it seems he hasnt had much parental supervision lately and hes been going through some challenging times. But still I did not really like what I saw of him. Hes far from one of the best Tanemura love interests though the bar is admittedly incredibly low. He is very caring towards Kisaki which I did appreciate since he tries to actively get to know her better. There are various other side characters who serve as comic relief even one named after the now infamous Shojo Beat translator Editor Nancy who has worked on a wide variety of English translated Arina Tanemura works. Theres an alien sidekick and a mysterious professor who even gets his own chapter. However that professors chapter is all about discovering his true gender and of course it means its very outdated this was from 2008. Its filled with some of the most dated gender stereotypes known to man and its in general not that great. The art is the typical Tanemura style with even more stylish outfits than usual. The art is very elegant with lots of flowing hair and theres the huge eyes that come to mind every time you mention Tanemuras art. I honestly feel like the main character designs for this manga are some of her bests mainly due to how stylish Giniro and Kisaki are. Mistress Fortune is mediocre at best. Its simple and doesnt offer much in the way of storytelling or character depth and really shows its age. However its not offensively bad and was engaging enough to read. Just dont expect much payoff as this is more of a silly romance than anything. The character designs at least provide something beautiful to look at when youre reading even if the story is lackluster.
