SPOILERS ARE MARKED WITH TAGS Overview Sugar Apple Fairy Tale is yet another show worth its title. The funny thing is there are actually fairies involved and its not just a story fitting that definition. Anne Halford spelled with an E because it sounds better is a young girl who dreams of becoming a silver sugar artisan/master much like her late mother. Just as youd expect that dream is what the show is all about: her journey to becoming the master. Ahem Pokemon reference ahem At first shes just a girl with a knack for crafting sugar confections in a world where humans keep fairies as slaves setting out to achieve her goal. She soon meets Challe the warrior fairy who becomes her faithful bodyguard and a bit more and Mithril her dutiful and mischievous little assistant. Anne spends much of her journey being sabotaged but she always gets back up again. And along the way she meets quite a few fellow silver sugar artisans some of which are unsavory characters. This probably makes you wonder Does she ever achieve her goal? Without spoiling I can say that she does eventually reach the top. The way it happened felt quite abrupt though And if Im being entirely honest somewhat unsatisfactory. reasons below open spoiler at your own risk The Good/Positive Sugar Apple Fairy Tale was given exceptional animation that I can say. The way the hair is done feels unique and the eyes are fitting for their characters. Its all done quite well in my opinion. And the confections were done quite nicely. Though that might just be some 3D effect or some work in the lighting and visual effects department Anne was a great main character. In the earlier episodes she didnt stand out to me very much. But there was a fair amount of character development and not just in her sugarcrafting skills. I loved that she fought back against female discrimination. Call it my feminist side if you will but I found that badass. That slap in episode 4 or 5 I dont remember okay earned her some points with me too. sorry if I spoiled you but I had to mention She does have her flaws though. I cant pinpoint exactly when but I did feel like she couldve done a better move in some scenes. not gonna lie I was mildly impressed that she had the gall to wear pants in that setting All in all decent MC. Points added. Is that really all I was excited about?... Well I also find it appealing how fairies played a big role in this anime. I have a soft spot for fantasy stuff and the like. No I didnt love how they were slaves but it was part of the plot Moving on The Bad/Negative It starts to get repetitive to be honest. Every few eps Anne gets herself in a situation where she needs to craft a sugar confection to prove her skills. Someone around her sabotages her and either Challe Mithril or someone else kind will help her out. Constantly getting done dirty somehow and standing back up again. Im not complaining I mean thats a way of making her more resilient I suppose. But it does get kind of repetitive on the viewers and youll probably notice this more prominently if you binge watch many eps in a sitting or complete this in a short amount of time. I did none of the above but still noticed. Another thing that most people typically get annoyed about is love triangles. I personally dont mind them but Ive noticed many people dislike them. We have a small love triangle going on for a few eps until the very end. that shouldnt be a spoilerright? Whether that can be ignored or tolerated is up to you personally I was fine with it. Other than that there arent really any points I particularly disliked other than character hate which I try not to drag into reviews since most of the time they are purposely written to be bleeps to help the plot. It did somewhat this time. Cheering Anne on and fervently hating Bridget and Jonas made it harder to spot the repetitiveness its most noticeable flaw in my eyes until the end when I was summing up my thoughts to write this. Or maybe thats a me thing I have a lot of those I do recall that some of her moves werent the best choice in some situations I felt I wouldve done it better. And Sugar Apple Fairy Tale wasnt a first priority either when it came to catching up. its pretty much selfexplanatory but my system is based on what I feel like or want to watch first in a sitting not about which episodes aired first or second Any remaining point deductions were probably due to lack of excitement or interest. I didnt even reach the Kita level for this only in the scenes where she was badass but overall not the entire show or even half see Bocchi the Rock to further understand my excitement meter Do I Recommend? Do I think you need to watch this ASAP? Do I think you HAVE to watch it? Do I think its worth prioritizing over some other shows? Nope not really. However if you want to increase your shojo count or if youre looking for nonisekai fantasy be my guest. Im not saying that you shouldnt watch this but if you have some other peak show in your Planning watch that one first. Unless you like saving best for last Its worth taking a look but its not the first thing Id recommend to a shojo newbie someone who wants to try these genres as its not the best first impression. This is just my opinion however if you enjoy the following: Fairies Fantasy setting no magic Romance that doesnt go all the way straight No lewdness or fanservice The idea of constantly being sabotaged but getting up again like watching someone A determined protagonist Anime about craftsmanship artists/artisans and the like Then you might as well go ahead. You can tell I was kind of trying to squeeze out the bulleted list whether that can be blamed on my lack of excitement or my forgetfulness is up to you. Earned some glances and maybe one or two stares from the infamous Momtaku but no open interest
