Not very often I ask myself if what I watched has any point in existing. Is it supposed to be art in some way? Was it commissioned and made by people with very little tact to what makes a good story? Sometimes both things can be true. Sparing your time with what is already written in the synopsis written by Anime News Network Bobby ni Kubittake doesnt really have much more to offer. In fact it excels at being exactly as described and to some extent also a good bucket of cold water at any chances of it being more than that. Bobby is uninteresting. A 17 years old boy who drops out of school to ride a bike and work at a caf. He receives letters from a girl who seems to like him a little too much after seeing him randomly on a magazine and writes back once on screen. At some points the lack of proper exposure and development is laughable. Bobby is a shell of a human an unknown being that has a single friend a sister both parents doesnt go to school anymore rides a bike and works at a caf. He barely says anything he doesnt seem to know what he is doing and he doesnt know what he will do next. For what is an anime that is essentially all about Bobby we dont even get to understand why he is called Bobby in the first place. The 45 minutes runtime seems short but is in fact a little too long for how little happens in the story. What you see written as the synopsis is what happens minus the ending. It really is just that just the bone without any meat. When we think about 80s anime especially OVAs we usually have much higher standards when it comes to animation. Bobby ni Kubittake is mostly composed of still panning shots with very little animation in between. The choice of what gets animated and what doesnt is random at best with a scene where Bobby meets his sister after a long time away from home getting very few animated frames while the following where he brings groceries to his apartment has a jump in quality that is not justifiable for what is a filler scene. It screams and shows their very low budget and lack of direction. More annoying than that is how the runtime is further filled with pointless music video montages with songs that try to illustrate what happened or what will happen. The last one particularly is extremely annoying as it spoils what is already a very predictable ending. The OVA ends with the most predictable ending you can think of. Credits roll as you think about what you just watched: if it was supposed to mean anything if its serious if its just undercut by the lack of money and time. At the end of the day a release is what it is and finished or not its going to be forever remembered the way it was sent into this world. In the case of Bobby though I think its biggest blessing is how forgettable it is.
