Teekyuu is unapologetically bathit insane. It doesnt matter if jokes dont land because youll hear another one before even processing what happened. Nothing makes sense and its not supposed to. If you cant find humour in it you can find humour in the fact that MAPPA worked on the first three seasons probably making it the last time their animators had good working conditions. 440https://64.media.tumblr.com/2647095919717f02d66991ed7baf13a1/tumblro5ht0fDm2i1u15x0ro2500.gif Usakame drifts away from the Teekyuu formula by having double the runtime and double the seriousness. It has its charms one being that the main characters were all voiced by members of the now disbanded idol group Earth Star Dream. The mainstream Seiyuu in anime all do a great job but its a nice change of pace to have unique voices. The same can be said about some of the girls in Teekyuu. The watered down / pastel style is also pleasing to the eye its refreshing and doesnt feel as corporate. Like Teekyuu the OP is very catchy. One of the few Ill go back and listen to on my own time. The ED in the first episode was also a nice surprise. 440https://64.media.tumblr.com/b46b2c10e24153e5dcca572cd9346d3a/tumblro5huwbfJIc1u15x0ro2500.gif Theres not a lot of competition in Insane Girls Doing Insane Things but when you decide to tone things down to a CGDCT you now have much more competition and anime that have done better. Usakame gets stuck between the two and falls flat both ways. If I wanted to see a Tennis anime Id watch Oregairu or Stars Align. If I wanted to see CGDCT Id watch A Place Further Than the Universe or Azumanga Daioh. And If I wanted to see a surreal comedy with meta humour sprinkled in Id simply just watch Teekyuu. Because Teekyuu is high octane having the character animation flip between two dynamic poses most of the time works in its favour. For the more grounded Usakame it just ends up looking unintentionally bad. The greatest moments in Usakame outside of Sogabe Eris voice acting are when the Teekyuu girls show up but it shouldnt have to rely on that. I only watched Usakame because of its connections to Teekyuu and I wouldnt watch it otherwise. Crossovers work best when both series have had equal time to develop. Even if Usakame was structured exactly like Teekyuu Id rather just have another season of Teekyuu. The characters in this show cant land retorts and punchlines like their counterparts can. Usakame tries to get you to care about its characters and its world but with only 12 short episodes thats not going to happen. Teekyuu works because it doesnt care about anything. 440https://i.ur.com/Tu9mpoX.gif All in all I wouldnt mind another season of Usakame if it keeps Millepensee away from Berserk.
