Theres honestly not much I can say about this ad besides...why the hell did I like it this much? Seriously. Was Suzume just this good? Did I wanna eat a Big Mac? I dunno. In all honesty though I grew up in a time and place where ads were a bit different. Im sure plenty of people could disagree but you gotta admit a decade or two ago the punchline was rarely something so random it sounded like a SEO studies graduate submitted it as a lastminute project undoubtedly they were meant to sell a product but at least in the 2000s in Poland I remember plenty of ads relying on genuinely funny punchlines or at the very least mascots that felt more like they came out of Warioware or some zany comic magazine and were supposed to make you laugh shoutouts to May Gd and Turbodymoman for being embodiments of the 2000s chaotic humor locally and less like corporate algorithm slop thats been slowcooked in a graphic design lab in order to check all the boxes at the same time in an attempt to create a liveaction adaptation of Lemon Demons Redesign Your Logo or something. And honestly? Nonmoe anime girls like Suzume often feel like a natural evolution or rather sidegrade of those mascots. Or at least I liked Suzume as a character and found her pretty so she appeals to me not because shes Kawaii Moe Chan 600 with at least a dozen sexy statues and official bodypillows but because the staff behind Suzume gave me reasons to like her. At the same time I also grew up at a time when going to McDonalds was a special treat frankly I was shocked to learn its budget food in the US that stuffs always been exotic and PRICEY here in my part of Europe Mind you Im from a middleclass family and its never been as expensive as a fancy dinner at a real nice restaurant but its always been a rare treat for me nonetheless. Hell nowadays for the price of a single sandwich at McDonalds with no fries or anything I can get a full kebab with THREE different salads just two floors down from my nearest McD. I watched this ad on a whim and was frankly pleasantly surprised to see it have this little narrative of Suzumes mom took her for a Big Mac as a special treat once because it reminded me of a bunch of times the same thing happened with my parents. The movie already had a bunch of things that made me relate to Suzume so adding such a strange piece of 2000s memories really got me. These two factors combined Suzume being a character I just liked on my own without having her merch shoved down my throat and relating to something I never really expected an ad for a fast food chain to pander to make this an extremely silly ad but a very inoffensive one at the same time. What can I say? If you liked Suzume watch this for a few more seconds of Suzume. Thats exactly what I did. Its exactly what is says on the tin and thats all it needed to be really. Disclaimer: Neither Makoto Shinkai nor McDonalds sponsored this review. However if either of them want to give me a free Big Mac in return I wont refuse. A free 25PLN sandwich is nothing to sneeze at.
