I absolutely have to preface this by saying ZeroOne is one of my alltime favourite Kamen Rider shows if not toku as a whole. It resonated with me deeply on a personal level especially Checkeras subplot and while it did stumble at a few points due to COVID screwing up the production I nonetheless think its very much up there for me as one of the best tokusatsu series ever made in general as its mix of coolness comedy and genuinely serious and deep plots was something unmatched and a truly remarkable opening to the Reiwa era of Kamen Rider and tokusatsu as a whole. So if some sort of extra material comes out for it I am pretty much obligated to give it a try as a toku fan especially given I loved the Metsuboujinrai postseries movie and the previous two seasons had a history of really good side material well to me at least. While I didnt expect there to be a comedic anime spinoff for this show ever after all the only time Rider really did that successfully was with a season that had VERY marketable mascot characters in the form of the Imagin ZeroOne did have Izu and she did take the world by storm but I wouldnt compare her to the average funny mascot character it makes sense one would exist honestly given our main character is a comedian by passion not obligation and how well that idea clashes with the theme of everimproving AI that the show explored. Now this isnt exactly a deep show by any means I think still in any case for what it is I think this spinoff does exactly what it needs to do its just a collection of short funny stories set within the ZeroOne canon like Metsuboujinrai.net learning about human game shows in the most roundabout way possible or Gai being his usual asshole self. The animation is neat too. Like it doesnt do anything spectacular but its not awful either its just your standard chibi affair. The artstyle lends itself exceptionally well to this style of animation and gags. Plus theres one gag in particular where a sudden change in artstyle genuinely made me burst out laughing. I love the joke about there being so many Mamorus that every crowd of the HIDEN building is just filled with mountains of identically animated duplicates of him too. Should you watch this if you have no prior experience with Kamen Rider? Probably not although it would certainly be an interesting experience. I mean I got into Kamen Rider because of a random review of a ZiO OOO and Fourze Armors figurines so who knows maybe itll work for you. In any case its a very charming series that does all it needs to do. If you liked ZeroOnes more comedic moments I think this is basically THE perfect thing for you. Also given Kamen Rider is no stranger to homoerotic undertones and even explicit gay sex all KR fans rememeber the famous Great Passing of the Pepper of 2019 I shouldnt have been surprised to see explicit romantic undertone between a male and nonbinary character in the form of this whole scene but it was a nice bonus anyway. Especially given how it implies Ikazuchi/Raiden is the bottom in this theoretical relationship. The thing here is while obviously Naki putting him in a kabedon is meant to be funny its interesting that implying these two being involved romantically is not a joke. https://files.catbox.moe/a5i2xc.jpg Overall while not exceptionally memorable or anything I think this is pretty much all you could get when you asked for a chibi spinoff for a Kamen Rider series with lots of comedy in the first place. Its popularity seems to reflect that given the next three shows got their own versions with the same sort of artstyle and humour. My only complaint is that Ark doesnt show up in person. I wanted to see some funny hiijinks with him dammit.
