My expectations for this and its sequel movie would be a complete remake similar to Adolescence of Utena. However that wasnt the case. These two movies are simply the original TV show stitched together with new scenes. If you are looking for Adolescence of Penguindrum you can take this off the list and just rewatch the original show unless you desperately want to see the new content please just skip to them instead of sitting through the movies butchered cuts lmfao. Good parts: The new insert songs are amazing I love the direction of the opening and it makes me tear up Yakushimaru Etsuko is very good Its Penguindrum like literally its just the TV show Bad parts of Penguindrum as a whole: Need knowledge of Japanese culture and modern history especially the Tokyo Subway Sarin Attacks. Can be too abstract/surreal at times but these are actually my favourite parts so this is viewer dependant. Either it will resonate with you hard or you will not like it. The Problems of The Movie I have found that due to its format change into a movie the pacing suffers as you arent given time to breathe inbetween each episodes. It moves too quickly there is no letting you process what the hell just went on because after all this is an Ikuhara work. Because I am already familiar with Penguindrum I could understand where it was going but I could imagine a new viewer being incredibly confused. On the topic of the new scenes: I think theyre really great and plays into Ikuharas favourite themes cycles and fate breaking of a cycle love overcomes all. I just dont know if its really worth sitting through two movie for them unless you are already invested in knowing the fate of the two characters from the show. And once again we run into the problem of this movie not being made for new viewers and that is fine given it is a 10th anniversary version but also being a worse experience for older fans because I just kept thinking I could be watching the original. Other than these two any criticism and praise about the original can be applied here because this is just the TV show lol. There is barely anything new it brings to the table and I am so frustrated with its existence. I wish they released short new scenes instead of creating a movie cut that removes the emotional impact of the original. The TV show is one of the most fantastic and creative anime in the current era and I highly recommend watching it and dear god I cant seem to hit the word count because theres not much to say here whoever came up with this word count that doenst include spaces system should be thrown into a giant pool of macaroni and shaken furiously They could have never seen The Re:cycle of Penguindrum with its nothingtotalkabout coming. TLDR: More like the Abridging of the Penguindrum
