In Kagayaku Otoko no Ko Juku the reader is invited into the world of crossdressing in all its details. From wigs to clothing sizes and makeup advice we learn everything necessary to turn from a boy to a girl. Our main character is pressured into it by his beloved mangaka but bit by bit he starts to enjoy it and to pay attention to the girl within himself. The manga shows not just how its done properly but also admits to how embarrassing or weird it can feel at first. Instead of simply claiming that it is a regular hobby that every second person has Otoko no Ko Juku opens up the door to understanding why one would give up not just their looks but even their identity in order to become a pretty girl. It goes deep into the shame of trying it out to the frustration of not being satisfied with the results until were finally happy about being a pretty girl. With all of that the mangaka urges us to understand that crossdressing should not become so big of a part of us that wed give up the person we were before in order to become our newfound self. The manga is very short and is really nothing more than a guide to crossdressing but Ive found myself enjoying it very much to the point that it has become one of my favorite mangas ever. I do think it couldve gone on for a bit longer by going into more details about certain types of clothing like it did for cheongsam and corsets but since everything meaningful for crossdressing has been explained I dont think its really necessary. Wadapen has a couple of short 46 panel oneshots that illustrate shortly why boys start to crossdress or how it feels to crossdress hes a mangaka who is obviously passionate about it not for sexual relief not to get closer to a romantic interest or for the sake of comedy like a lot of mangas portray crossdressing but Im not gonna call out anyone here he enjoys crossdressing as a stress relief and to live life through another lense a lense you cant get as a man. His characters arent just naturally girly their bodies are especially effeminate or anything like it theyre just regular guys who find themselves trying to be girls and I liked to read it a lot. At the end of the manga Wadapensensei summarizes some of the most important things he has taught us throughout his manga to make sure we didnt get distracted too much and dont have to go back to rememorize certain points it is obvious that he has either done a lot of research or has engaged in crossdressing himself. Im glad that there are people out there willing to take their hobby into the public sphere knowing how many misconceptions there are about them. I think that reading this can really help to understand crossdressers and to learn why some people engage in it. It was a great manga and Im very happy to have read it.
