I love the first season of Mr. Osomatsu. The fast paced insane nature of the comedy flowed extremely well with me. Easily one of my Top 5 favorite anime period. And after Season 1 Im convinced that they used every good joke and idea in that first season. Because the second season especially the first half is a MAJOR step down in quality. After a perfect first season the second season was disappointing. We didnt get a third season this year probably because besides fan reception being down sales were down by a LOT. It certainly made money but Season 1s success was ASTRONOMICAL. Easily one of the bestselling anime in Japan its sales were double whatever was in second place that year it was a giant cash cow. And Season 2s numbers were less than a sixth of the first. Osomatsumania was more than gone and itd be more tragic if the quality was the same as the first but the downgrade is almost embarrassing. So instead of a third season we get this movie. I dont know how successful it was from what I read it couldnt have been that much more successful than Season 2. I didnt even know when I was going to watch it legally or otherwise Viz Media has held onto the rights for two years with the only information released being the dub cast of the main six which it has been a year since that was revealed. I wanted to give you this context in case you know nothing about Mr. Osomatsu. And again I LOVE the first season. Without a doubt my favorite anime comedy. I want you to understand that Im a fan when I say that this is the most depressing movie Ive seen this year. I never laughed once so it automatically fails as a comedy. As a movie well what the fuck is the plot? After going to a high school reunion and realizing once again that theyre losers a magical cat transports them not to a world where theyre popular not sending them back to when they were in high school but instead to their memories of when they were in high school. A bafflingly bland plot to go along with the unfunny comedy coupled with an ending that is sad whether intentional or not. None of the magic from either season of the TV show is here at least I laughed in Season 2. I felt like I just watched a franchise that I love die for 2 hours. I wish I could say more about the movie but I dont have much else to say. If this is truly the best that the franchise can come up with for a movie then I think its better that Mr. Osomatsu is put out of its misery.
