Resident Evil: Vendetta does NOT deserver more than a twostar rating. Vendetta was the worst of the CG Resident Evil movies. ...only Resident Evil fans will enjoy this. is not far from the truth. Thats not saying a lot because theyre not particularly great just sort of entertaining. Im fully aware of how cheesy the story of Resident Evil can get and the amount of campiness that usually ensues. Ive experienced the infamous laser hall scene from 4 and the boulder smash from 5. But lets be real here this film felt more like an overthetop action film than a Resident Evil one. However Im sure that could be debated by some if were talking about the later Resi entries before 7. One scene while admittedly cool felt more like a John Wick movie than anything and it just didnt work. Sure it made me think it was badass but then it had me wondering why something like this was here. A portion of the film felt very Resident Evil 1 which was great because the emphasis was on the zombies but then it just takes a huge leap about a third of the way into the film. Once a certain character is taken away things kind of lose their momentum. There was also a scene in which Breaking Bad was mentioned. It took me a second to clue into what they were referencing because I had a hard time believing that they would do that. It was just so strange and out of place. I know there is a scene in Breaking Bad in which Resident Evil 4 is debated...but its a completely different universe compared to this one. I just found the joke jarring to me and out of place in the movie. Hell just the fact that it was mentioned in the actual Resident Evil franchise had me scratching my head and asking why. I found that the overall story was lackluster? Its a Resident Evil filler film if anything. The same could be said for the previous movies but here the antagonist felt too personal. Normally you have a big bad corporation or government terrorizing the people. Here its almost a sort of revenge story. A Vendetta perhaps? Sorry I just had to get that joke in. The scale of the movie feels off to me. Things should have been left a mystery but it really ruins the film when you have to explain something. The antagonist was more of a sidecharacter youd find in a Resident Evil game not a fullon villain. The overall story was a mess of pacing and there was no overall end goal besides getting to the bad guy. I wasnt particularly intrigued by any of it. The intensity wasnt even there either besides having Rebecca Chambers fight off some zombies in a science facility. I couldve gone with having the story revolve around her rather than have Chris and Leon take hold of the film. Theres a lot I could go into about underutilized plots and characters in the entire franchise but I digress. The spirit of Resident Evil is here for sure. Everything else amalgamates into a schizophrenic plot and presentation of what the director thinks Resident Evil is. RE: Vendetta is entertaining yes. Its also beautifully animated though releasing one year after the Final Fantasy Kingsglaive movie which arguably looked better. Rebecca Chambers looks so damn cute and Leon is a damn fine looking alpha male. Aaaaaanyway Chris Redfield...sort of is in a weird inbetween for me maybe because hes gone through so many drastic design changes? Hes caught between his Resident Evil 5 design and his old lessbuff one. A small nitpick but Id thought Id point it out. I didnt find anything particular that really upset me but the number of scenes that just did not fit in a movie like this detracted from cheesy enjoyment. Had there been an emphasis on the zombies and not the overthetop action a la Resident Evil 5 then I might have thought differently. I know the previous movies used this quite a bit but here its like they were really trying to channel two different styles. Old and new Resident Evil is present and theres just too much that feels off.
