Ongaku Shoujo is something Ive known about for years largely thanks to the songs from the project being mapped and Ranked/Loved in osu namely stuff like Justabilityhttps://www..com/watch?v=7Tb89e3mqss a song I very quickly fell in love with and still really enjoy listening to which gradually lead me to develop an interest in getting into the anime of this. I discovered there was a movie and an entire anime series and wasnt sure where to start but from the getgo there was a red flag seeing as the general consensus for both the movie and anime was a 5/10 maybe a weak 6/10. I asked around on Twitter and generally got a response that the movie is better than the anime. Today I finally sat down and watched the movie and...it sucked. Wow it...sucked. First of all calling this a movie is a bit of an overstatement considering its about the same length as a typical episode. When I started watching it I had a doubletake and paused to check if the movie was actually 25 minutes long and it...was so onwards I pressed to watch this socalled movie. The movie generally centers around 2 characters Chitose Haru and Kumagai Eri. These 2 characters attend the same school and are even brought in to live together in the same dorm room. What feels like in a flash Eri goes from hating Haru to going to karaoke with her starting to like her and eventually forms the duo Ongaku Shoujo with her which was explained with a time skip. A couple minute time skip which eventually cultivates in some drama about Haru moving abroad at the end of the semester. That drama means absolutely nothing though as its resolved basically with the power of friendship in the following scene. While visually and soundwise the anime movie is fine at the end of it it just makes me ask what happened? because thats the only thing that runs through my head. Watching this I genuinely felt like they wanted to do a lot more but I dont know whether they ran out of time or money or whether there was some sort of internal dispute the movie is sadly pretty awful as a result. I dont recommend watching this. Im not sure if the TV anime series of Ongaku Shoujo is any better seeing as Ive only seen 1 episode at the time of writing this review but this movie is underwhelming forgettable and highly rushed. If you were considering skipping this youre not missing anything by doing so. Id stick to listening to Ongaku Shoujos music on YouTube or Spotify instead and following the project that way rather than wasting your time watching this. If you want an idol anime to sit through Id recommend Love Live School Idol Projecthttps://anilist.co/anime/15051/LoveLiveSchoolidolproject/ instead. While the original 2 seasons are a bit underwhelming they are leaps and bounds ahead of the Ongaku Shoujo movie and gets better as it goes. The SIP movies the 2 Love Live Sunshine seasons + movie are some actually great and decent watches especially the second season of Sunshine.
