She is a Japanese manga artist who debuted with Esther Please in 1982 in the magazine Petit Flower. Okano attended a graphic design school after graduating from high school and has never worked as a manga assistant. In 1989 she won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo for Fancy Dance. She also received the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2001 for her work on Onmyouji. She went on to produce a sequel version Onmyouji: Tamatebako in the magazine Melody.
