Harakami studied film and initially wanted to pursue a career writing scores however a demo tape of his electronic material sent to the Sublime label garnered him the opportunity to remix Ken Ishii and later to appear on the Volume labels TrancePacific Express compilation.
Rei Harakami released his debut EP titled Rei Harakami EP in 1997. His first studio album Unrest was released in 1998. It was followed by Opaq 1999 Red Curb 2001 and Lust 2005.
