After a few more works he left the studio in 1968 and dedicated himself to his work as a mangaka. In 1979 he made his return to the anime industry. Masaki directed and screenwrote a handful of works for Madhouse during the 80s out of which Barefoot Genhttps://anilist.co/anime/1824/ being perhaps the most notable. In 1986 Masaki retired from animation and continued his manga career into the 90s.
