Yamazaki was involved in independent animation as a student at a film school and after working as an assistant to a manga artist he won the 99th YJ Monthly Newcomers Award Encouragement Prize Shueisha for Kappa no Takaramono under the name Yamazaki Hiroshi. He made his debut with Megane Kitan in 1988 which won the 105th Honorable Mention Award.
