Greetings.
Anime and manga have knowingly been a part of my life for over 14 years now plus a few more as part of my childhood when I was not aware of their origin. An integral part of my everyday life they consume a considerable chunk of my daily thoughts even during the busiest periods of my life. Theyve helped me gain a lot of things and played a large part in me forming my current personality point of view and value system.
My journey was a pretty common one as I first tried some classics to gain perspective and form opinion then expanded to more popular titles for diversity and eventually to many different genres in order to get a better and more well rounded understanding of the medium. Its only in the last year or so that I have started genuinely feeling that I have a decent grasp on the industry and confident enough to state opinions and holistically back them up.
My list is heavily personalized meaning I place great emphasis on how titles resonate with me. I dont particularly enjoy a numbered scoring system but I have adopted it nonetheless.
Thus I rate as such:
10 Perfects do not exist. These are my absolute favorites and titles I find no flaws with. They push all my right buttons and provide storytelling in the way that touches my strings. I can defend them infinitely rewatch them too.
9 Some of the greatest stories Ive ever consumed or titles I love yet I can understand and accept well founded arguments on their flaws and drawbacks and make some of them myself.
8 Either exceptionally well made series that I respect but unfortunately failed to fully resonate with or some shows in which I recognize a fair amount of problems yet are right up my alley and offer immense enjoyment.
7 Series that had some good points and a few problems that offered entertainment while consuming them but will rarely occupy my thoughts long term.
6 Overall bland experiences or partly problematic with few elements here and there that kept my interest but which I wouldnt confidently suggest to anyone.
5 Titles I consider Ive wasted my time on largely unoriginal that failed to emit identity and a single interesting trait for me to enjoy.
4 Reserved for the few experiences I generally try to avoid that have actually managed to generate negative emotion in me and have been insufferable to complete. I dont bother to differentiate them in score between 14 as I find it meaningless.
Never dropped a thing and consider my scoring to be somewhat on the lenient side.
I have different criteria depending on the genre and try to judge a show based on its categorys merits as well as how well it represented them.
My preferences lean towards Drama Action or Psychological stuff secondarily mixed with Fantasy Mystery Thriller Supernatural and the occasional Adventure and Sports element. Ill often enjoy a good Slice of Life or Romance show to relax. Comedies are extremely hit or miss pure comedies more often miss than not and I dont generally like Mecha or SciFi with few exceptions as well as Ecchi and Horror.
Genres aside some of the tags that I find consistently interesting are: Alternate Universe Classic Literature Coming of Age Ensemble Cast Historical Iyashikei Magic Martial Arts Mythology Philosophy Super Power Superhero Swordplay Time Manipulation Tragedy and Urban Fantasy. Some of them rarely disappoint while others require specific handling to win me over.
But when alls said and done Ill always be a shounen fan at heart.
Main elements I search for in stories include:
A strong emphasis on characters their thought process emotions inner conflict and personal growth through a well defined plot.
Expressive and clean art that has emotional depth with the ability to draw me in and promote the aforementioned desired qualities.
Excellent music to perfectly match the atmosphere and take the series it dubs a step further.
A progression thats logically explained in the series context preferably not too in your face and that leaves no room for argument on plot holes all while managing to remain emotionally engaging.
I like and appreciate my sakuga and other technical aspects surrounding animation but only to elevate an already good story without which they feel hollow no matter how exceptionally impressive they may be.
Finding Eva about six years ago was my peak and ever since I mostly bide my time with seasonals while I fill the rest of my time with older stuff from my plan to watch list. I also rewatch my favorite series quite often.
My introduction might have turned out a little bit lengthy so many thanks for reading.
Yoroshiku.
