Originally an University of Tokyo graduate he went on to work at Toei Douga where he would be mentored by legendary animator Yasuo Ootsukahttps://anilist.co/staff/136873/YasuoOtsuka and eventually become acquainted with upandcoming animator Hayao Miyazakihttps://anilist.co/staff/96870/HayaoMiyazaki. After his directorial debut Taiyou no Ouji: Horus no Daiboukenhttps://anilist.co/anime/1044/TheLittleNorsePrince/ he and this newfound friend would move on to work at Zuiyo Eizo later Nippon Animation where he directed several TV anime. Among these shows would be Alps no Shoujo Heidihttps://anilist.co/anime/2225/HeidiGirloftheAlps/ which was an international hit and introduced the now integral step of the Layout process into the anime production pipeline changing anime production forever.
