SPOILERS BEWARE Kinos Journey got a reboot/remaster whatever you want to call it 14 years after the original and like I mentioned in my other review of this series they simply dont make anime like they used to a couple of decades ago the original Kinos Journey had this very ominous and mysterious vibe going that you would never know what to expect from each of the countries now Im not saying that its missing in the remaster but I just dont quite get the same feel from it. Its still Kinos Journey as each episode is basically its standalone OVAlike episode where you know something bad is probably going to end up happening by the end of the episode. Take the 3rd episode for example with the moving country that in itself is pretty breathtaking technology for the era that the anime is set but when it fired a laser that melted the wall I just lost itlike Im sorry but what??? The people living inside the moving country are confirmed time travellers or alike since they possess such advanced technology that no medieval country would be able to fight back and all the moving country does is just prod along going forward regardless of whats in their way literally crushing other countries and their land if it gets in the way so in other words they literally dont give a damn about anything but themselves which is a very selfish egoistic mindset. Thats just one side of humanity so what this show portrays is actually very realistic which is why the original really stood out to me as it showed humanity from multiple perspectives and it was quite realistic to a degree but this damn laser that came out just had me in complete shock Anything onwards after the 3rd episode however has been so damn good starting from literally the 4th onwards Ive been having such a blast watching this anime its moving me emotionally whether its Tifanas story who was an orphan or Photos story who came from the life of being a slave to actually living a happy life these tales are so heartwarming for my heart and its these kind of moments and scenes that always remain to be the most memorable to me so the fact this show has started doing such amazing episodes has really made me start enjoying the show so much more and I know I mentioned that most episodes have a bad/sad ending but Photos ending was simply so sweet and beautiful I truly felt happy for her in the end. Another difference between this remaster and the original is that Shizu appears a LOT more than he did in the original but this time he has Tifana with him who is just adorably cute and she even opens up to them Holy poggers that was so sweet and heartwarming an ostracized orphan like her must have closed her heart off to everyone after her miserable past and yet she manages to trust people again and Im going to be honest with you here I treasure every little bit of screen time with Tifana now since its just precious. I really cant get enough of her. Then came the 2 episodes from the original series firstly Sakura and her country that was destroyed by a volcano eruption this was the final episode in the original and damn that one hit hard here even though I knew it was coming it still hits hardand once the letters come out it brings me to tears sometimes words can mean so much just take a look at a masterpiece like Violet Evergarden that gets all its emotions across with just letters seeing the ending of this episode reminded me of Violet Evergarden which is why it also gets me emotional its a farewell story in a similar sense to what Violet did. Then theres the following episode which shows Kinos backstory and I cant look past how adorable she was as a child its the same with Tifana as both are just adorable. It felt like some bits were skipped from the original which is how I also felt for the Colosseum episode although that one was skipped by an entire episode so they had to cut quite a lot. In conclusion the remaster had some really good parts especially the episode with the ship country and the few that followed were in my opinion the best episodes of the anime you cant look past Sakuras episode either though as that one brought out the emotions from me. On the whole I would still say the original is slightly better since the way it portrayed its episodes was so different but thats because it aired nearly two decades ago the remaster is from 2017 and if it tried to convey the same emotions as the original then it just wouldnt be able to since times have simply changed. Its still worth checking out since some of the new episodes were so damn heartwarming and sweet. At the end of the day its more Kinos Journey and if you enjoyed the original then Im sure you will enjoy this one too.
