SPOILERS BEWARE The sequel season to Magia Record certainly had something to prove I rewatched the prequel before moving straight to this season so I could get a sense of watching it all in one go oddly enough this season only had eight episodes but did it deliver during them? I can definitely say that this season was better than the last and after listening to the OP/ED on YouTube Im now getting other Magia Record vid recommendations which seem to be based on the actual game content since I saw one about the Walpurgisnacht which clearly we dont see in these two seasons. The game content aside which I will return to near the end of this review this season was actually quite enjoyable. I mentioned in my S1 review that there was no Homura and that request was answered within minutes as I believe she appears in the first episode pretty early. This is not quite the cold emotionless Homura but its Homura from a different timeline and in case you havent read my Madoka Magica review then she was my favorite magical girl from there. 800https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/635602177833959439/968207899245543524/unknown.png Magia record focuses more heavily on the Magia Record cast which I will refer to when describing Iroha and Yachis party. The other will be Madoka cast when referring to the original five girls. There is some character development for the main girls here which is nice that is focuses more on them now since the first season offered so many characters all at once and me not having played the game initially had a pretty difficult time comprehending the huge cast that was thrown at me. After finally given enough screen time I was able to start building affection for some of the girls which I definitely couldnt have said for S1. This season felt so much more wholesome the reunion episodes and scenes were truly touching and heartwarming. The animation at times was fantastic and since this is adapted by studio Shaft I could have expected that much. I mean it genuinely the fight scenes were so damn beautiful yet badass at the same time this dark nature of Madoka Magica and its spin off series is incredibly immersing and very fun to be part of since at times you basically dont know what to expect. 800https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/635602177833959439/968209392648470559/unknown.png Then comes its creepy disturbing nature fitting of this genre the final scenes of the 7th episode are hard to watch when a comrade is dismantled to a degree. Tsuruno Yui is left mangled with her limbs bent in ways they shouldnt bend after Yachis failed connect this eventually leads to a very meaningful backstory for Tsuruno. Its moments like this that I live for in an anime. None other than backstories of course and its so damn important for a show with a scale of characters such as Magia Record. Sanas backstory from S1 was my highlight of the series and its no surprise Tsurunos is another from this season. Backstories hit me differently and if they are somewhat sad and tragic then youre hitting the critical spots for me. Throughout the series a lingering thought was always at the back of my mind can I classify this as a MOE anime? since its cute girls doing lesser cute stuff and more dark disturbing things but you get where Im coming from. The entire cast is feminine and all relationships are essentially yuri to a degree. We had Madoka and Homura in the original and same can be said for Iroha and Yachi to a degree so I will classify it as a MOE since it has all the pointers towards being labelled as one. 800https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/670745625670713353/896861506862473256/unknown.png My final closing notes on this season will be that a finale season has already been announced which I am genuinely very excited for and thats not all I have now taken an interest in the game this anime was adapted from so I may be checking it out as well since I have developed enough affection for some of the characters to even play the game they originated from. On a final note yes I will definitely be checking out S3 when its finally out since I really enjoyed this season and I am excited to see how this side series will conclude. Its still a shadow of what the original Madoka Magica was but it certainly has potential to have an awesome ending. 800https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/635602177833959439/968212323875553380/unknown.png Post edit: I researched the game and turns out its English servers where shut around a year ago so thats quite a bummer after me finally having enough interest in the series to check out its original source only to be hit with such disappointing news.
